What macro lens should I get for my Z8 right now? I have my sisters wedding coming up in like ten days in Philly and she specifically asked for those crazy detailed shots of the jewelry and centerpieces. I keep seeing the Z 105mm f/2.8 VR S being called the best option but then I read some forums saying the 50mm MC is better for travel and cheaper.

I'm really torn because the 105mm is pricey and I'm already over budget but I dont want to regret the image quality on such a high res sensor. Does the 105mm autofocus way better on the Z8 than the 50mm? I need to order this by tomorrow so it gets here in time. Which one would you guys actually pick for a fast paced wedding day...

Regarding what #1 said about "I grabbed the heavier one for a recent gig", I actually have to politely disagree for your specific situation. If you are already over budget, the Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S is a beast that might honestly be overkill for centerpieces and rings. Dont get me wrong, the glass is incredible, but on a Z8 it makes for a very front-heavy setup when you are already tired from a long wedding day. I actually think the Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 is a decent option because it doubles as a normal prime lens. The autofocus is a bit slower than the 105mm, yeah, but for stationary jewelry and flowers? It really doesnt matter much. You just gotta get closer. If you really want to save cash and still get that crazy detail, you could even look at the 7Artisans 60mm f/2.8 II Macro for Nikon Z. It is manual focus, but for macro shots, most pros use manual focus and focus peaking on the Z8 anyway. Plus its like a fraction of the cost. Honestly, weddings are so fast that sometimes having a tiny lens like the 50mm MC that fits in a jacket pocket is a total lifesaver compared to lugging that 105mm log around... just my two cents tho.

I grabbed the heavier one for a recent gig and it was a total lifesaver.

  • better reach
  • faster motors Working distance definitely saved me during jewelry shots because I didnt block my own lighting.
