What mirrorless camera should I even buy if I only have like $1000 max? Im trying to find something before my trip to Japan next month but everything I see online is just so confusing and I'm honestly getting really frustrated with all the technical talk. I dont know what a sensor even does or why some lenses cost more than the actual camera... its a lot.

I basically just want to take clear photos of my kids at their soccer games and some nice scenery shots without having to take a whole college course on how to use it. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I literally have no idea what Im doing. Is there something simple that wont break the bank? I'm so lost right now...

I've been shooting for years and honestly, I still get annoyed by how technical people make everything sound. If you're heading to Japan next month and just want to capture the kids and some scenery without a headache, you've got some solid options that are super beginner-friendly. I've used these myself and been really happy with how they handle.

  • Canon EOS R50 with RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens
  • This is basically built for what you need. It has a 'Creative Assist' mode that lets you change settings using simple words like 'brightness' instead of 'exposure'. The autofocus is killer for soccer too.
  • Sony Alpha a6100 with 16-50mm Zoom Lens
  • This one is a bit older but it works like a charm and is usually way under your budget. It's really compact which is a lifesaver when you're walking around Kyoto all day. Ngl, the Canon is probably your best bet if you want to avoid the 'college course' vibe. The menus are way more intuitive and I've never had a complaint about the colors it puts out. Just charge it up, pop it in Auto, and enjoy your trip! You really dont need to overthink the sensor stuff right now... just focus on the memories and the sushi.
