What is the best mirrorless camera under $1000 for travel?

Ive been shooting with my bulky Nikon D850 for years and I absolutely love the full frame look but honestly my back is killing me just thinking about lugging that thing through Tokyo this summer. Im finally ready to make the jump to mirrorless for a dedicated travel setup but man the options under 1000 bucks are actually way more overwhelming than I thought theyd be! I was looking at the Sony a6400 because of the autofocus which is obviously legendary but then I saw a used Fuji X-T30 II and the colors just look so much better straight out of camera without me having to spend hours in Lightroom.

My budget is pretty firm at $1k for the body and at least one versatile lens since I leave in about 8 weeks. I definitely need something with decent weather sealing because I tend to get stuck in the rain a lot lol but I also want something that doesnt scream tourist with a massive camera when Im doing street photography. Is IBIS really a dealbreaker at this price point if Im mostly shooting handheld in low light? I keep hearing mixed things about whether its worth sacrificing sensor size for better stabilization or if I should just stick to a faster prime lens. What would you guys grab if you were in my shoes?

I made a similar move when my back started acting up and honestly Ive been so happy with the change. I went with the Sony a6400 with 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 Power Zoom Lens and it works well for travel.

Unfortunately, budget sealing usually disappoints. Does the lens need sealing too? Try the Canon EOS R10 with RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM or Nikon Z50 with NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f3.5-6.3 VR.

Re: "I made a similar move when my back..."

  • Totally agree about the weight! If you need weather sealing and killer stabilization for handheld low light, Micro Four Thirds is basically perfect for Tokyo.
  • Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III has legendary IBIS and pro-level sealing.
  • Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm f4.0 PRO is an awesome, sharp, weather-sealed lens. This setup is tiny. It hits the budget! You wont even need a tripod... the stabilization is magic.

Honestly I am dealing with the exact same thing right now and it is such a struggle. Stumbled on this thread and had to chime in because I spent forever researching when my old gear got too heavy for travel and honestly the grass isnt always greener. I actually tried out two different systems recently to see which brand handled colors better and both were kinda disappointing in their own way. The one I eventually got had some major issues with the battery life and the weather sealing was definitely not as good as expected for the price. It feels like as soon as you try to save weight you lose that rugged feel we were used to with the bigger bodies. Its a bummer because I really wanted to love the smaller setup but I keep missing the reliability of my old kit... basically just commiserating because finding that perfect travel combo under a grand feels impossible lately.
