Gonna be traveling to Japan next month and finally want a real camera. Budget is $1k max. I saw people recommending the Sony a6400 for autofocus but then read the Fuji X-S10 has better colors and now I'm just confused. What's actually the best mirrorless deal right now?

honestly im super satisfied with the Fujifilm X-S10 26.1MP APS-C for travel. Colors are magic. If you want better tracking, the Canon EOS R10 24.2MP 4K60 is also a solid deal.

Ngl, the Sony Alpha a6400 with 16-50mm Lens is pretty disappointing in 2024. People hype the AF, but the sensor readout is slow and that micro-USB port is just ancient history. I hate that it still uses the old NP-FW50 batteries because they die way too fast when youre walking around Tokyo all day. Honestly, I had issues with the Sony menu system too... its a total maze. If you want better specs, the Canon EOS R10 with RF-S 18-45mm IS STM is technically superior. It has better ergonomics and the Digic X processor handles subject tracking way more reliably. Unfortunately, the Fujifilm X-S10 Body has some thermal issues during video that really bugged me. For a pure travel experience, the Canon is less of a headache even if the lens selection is kinda slim right now.

  • Yeah, I totally agree. It feels super dated. I actually tried to love it for travel but the screen and menus are just frustrating... honestly skip it. If youre looking for that $1k sweet spot, its actually getting tougher to find a perfect one. Every option has some annoying dealbreaker lately.
  • Fujifilm X-S10 with XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 Lens is great for those film looks, but the battery is unfortunately gonna leave you hanging mid-day in Kyoto. I had issues with it overheating during video too.
  • Canon EOS R10 with RF-S 18-150mm Lens has amazing autofocus, but the build quality is not as good as expected for the price. Feels like a toy in your hands.
  • Nikon Z50 with 16-50mm and 50-250mm Lenses is fine but the lens selection for APS-C is just sad. Plus that flip-down screen is useless if you use a tripod. Tbh Japan is a lot of walking so maybe just get the Fuji and carry three spares.

  • I totally agree, its a great feeling when you have a kit that works well and produces results you like. But honestly its ridiculous how difficult it has become to find anything truly reliable without spending a fortune. It feels like the industry is just leaving the sub-$1000 crowd in the dust. The current market situation drives me crazy:
  • Build quality on budget bodies is honestly such a scam these days.
  • Basic reliability features are being stripped away to upsell us on pro gear.
  • Prices keep going up while the actual hardware feels more like plastic toys. I have no complaints with my own gear, but seeing the limited options for new photographers is just disheartening. It makes me so frustrated that you have to compromise so much on durability just to get a decent travel camera. Companies dont seem to care about the hobbyist tier anymore, they just want the big spenders.
