So my sister is graduating high school in like three weeks and I really want to get her a proper camera. She loves taking photos of everything when we go on trips but she just uses her old iPhone and the quality isnt great when we try to print them out for albums. I went to the big electronics store near my house yesterday and the guy there kept talking about mirrorless cameras being the new thing and how they are better than those big bulky ones but everything he showed me was like a thousand dollars or more which is way out of my league.
I only have about $500 max to spend on this and honestly Id prefer to stay closer to $400 if that is even possible for something good. I dont really know what mirrorless even means compared to a normal camera sorry if that sounds stupid but I just want something that isnt too heavy for her to carry around in her backpack. Ive been looking online and Im just totally lost with all the numbers and letters in the names. Like I saw these but dont know if they are even worth it anymore:
- Sony a6000
- Canon m50
- Something from Panasonic maybe?
Is there actually a decent mirrorless camera I can get for under 500 bucks this year or am I just dreaming? I dont want to buy her something that is basically the same as her phone because that would be a waste of money...

In my experience, sticking to the Micro Four Thirds system is the safest way to get a reliable kit under $500. Ive tested many setups over the years and these are solid, tried-and-true choices:
- Panasonic Lumix G7 with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens

Building on the earlier suggestion, checking the used or refurbished market is the most logical way to stay under $500 while getting something modern. I would look specifically for a Canon EOS M50 Mark II EF-M 15-45mm IS STM. This camera is a balanced choice for a graduate because it handles high-quality stills and video quite well. Its lightweight enough for her backpack, though keep in mind that Canon is focusing on their newer RF system now. This means the EF-M mount is basically a dead end, but there are still plenty of affordable lenses out there. Alternatively, a Fujifilm X-T200 with XC 15-45mm OIS PZ is a decent option if she wants great colors without editing every shot. Quick tip: buy from a reputable used dealer with a return policy. If you find a unit with a low shutter count, itll serve her for years.

TL;DR: Look for a used Sony Alpha a6000 with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens. Honestly, $500 for a new mirrorless setup is tough. Youre better off buying used to stay in budget. The a6000 you saw is actually still a great choice for travel because its tiny. Also look for a refurbished Canon EOS M50 Mark II with 15-45mm Lens. Its super easy to learn on and way better for prints than her iPhone.

Just saw this and had to jump in. In my experience over the years, the biggest risk with a tight budget is buying a used camera that ends up being a lemon. For a graduation gift, you really want something that actually works right out of the box without any drama. I've tried many setups, and honestly, the safest way to get her a mirrorless kit for under $500 is sticking to manufacturer refurbished units. They usually check the hardware way better than some random person on eBay would.
- Canon EOS R100 refurbished (it uses the newer RF mount which is better for the future)
- Olympus E-M10 Mark III (the build quality is like a tank)
- Panasonic Lumix GX85 I eventually learned that reliability is worth way more than a few extra megapixels. Getting a kit that includes a basic lens and maybe even a short warranty will save you so much stress. Stick to the official refurbished stores if you can, it's just safer.
