I'm freaking out a bit because I'm supposed to start my travel vlog next week for my trip to Japan and I still haven't bought a camera. I have like $800 max to spend but honestly the more I look at specs the more my head hurts. I saw some Sony ones like the ZV-something and then a Canon one but i dont even know what makes one better than the other. Is 4k even standard now? I just want something that looks good and isnt too hard to use because im not tech savvy at all. My logic was that more expensive means better but $800 is my hard limit. Does anyone know which one is actually worth the money for a beginner?

@Reply #1 - good point! Sony is definitely a solid pick. In my experience tho, if you are walking all day in Japan, you want something super light. I have tried many setups over the years and these are great for beginners:

Japan is pricey enough already, so dont feel like you gotta drop the full 800 bucks to get good 4K. Honestly, I have been shooting for a long time and being under budget is basically the best feeling because it leaves room for extra gear or just better food. I am super happy with how these cheaper options perform lately...

  • Canon PowerShot V10 4K Vlog Camera this little guy is amazing for beginners. It looks kinda weird but it works well and fits right in a pocket. The built-in stand is a total lifesaver when you want to film yourself eating ramen at a counter.
  • GoPro HERO12 Black 5.3K Action Camera ngl for travel vlogging these are absolute beasts. The stabilization is basically magic and you wont worry about bumping it in a crowded Tokyo station or dropping it.
  • Sony ZV-1F Vlogging Camera if you want that Sony look for less this is the one. It has a super wide lens which is perfect for capturing your face and the background scenery at the same time. Definitely grab a high-quality card like the SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card with the money you save. You are gonna be taking so many videos and running out of space is the worst feeling mid-trip. Just keep it simple and have a blast in Japan!

Japan is gonna be amazing!! I went last spring and honestly, my phone just didnt do it justice. I panicked just like you and bought the Sony ZV-1 4K Vlogging Camera like three days before my flight. Best decision ever! I was so worried about the tech stuff but it basically does everything for you. Here is why I love it for beginners:

  • The autofocus is insane. It finds your eyes instantly so you never look blurry.
  • It has a flip-out screen so you can see if youre actually in the frame.
  • Background defocus button! One click and you get that beautiful blurry background look. If you want something where you can change the lenses later, the Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Kit Lens is also under your $800 limit and it's fantastic. Just pick one and go have fun in Tokyo! It's gonna be a life changing trip.
