I’m trying to upgrade my support setup for Sony telephoto work (mostly 200-600mm, sometimes with a 1.4x TC) and I’m getting tired of shaky shots and awkward tracking. I shoot wildlife/birds, often in wind, and I’d love something stable but not insanely heavy for hikes. Any tripod + head combo you’d recommend (ball vs gimbal), ideally under $800?
For your situation, I’d go gimbal 9 times outta 10. I shoot the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS a ton (and yeah, with the 1.4x it gets… spicy in wind lol), and a gimbal just makes tracking birds feel way less fight-y.
**Option A (my pick): tripod + gimbal (best for birds in flight)**
I’ve had awesome luck with a midweight carbon set like Leofoto LS-324C Carbon Fiber Tripod paired with a gimbal like Benro GH2 Gimbal Head. Pros: buttery tracking, less fatigue, easier to hold a horizon while panning. Cons: bulkier than a ball head, and you’ll want to balance the lens properly (use an Arca plate).
**Option B: sturdier tripod + gimbal (best in wind, heavier hikes)**
Something like Sirui AM-284 Carbon Fiber Tripod + Benro GH5C Carbon Fiber Gimbal Head is seriously stable. It’s closer to your budget ceiling, but it’s a “buy once cry once” vibe.
**Option C: ball head (ok for perched wildlife, meh for BIF)**
A solid ball like Sirui K-40X Ball Head is great for general tele work, but for fast birds you’ll be fighting flop and tension tweaks all day.
Little tip: hang your bag from the hook in wind + use wider stance. Makes a HUGE difference. good luck!
Seconding the gimbal call above — i tried making a ball head work w/ the 200-600 and it was… yeah nah lol. What helped me a ton in wind was going *bigger on the apex + diameter* and not chasing the lightest legs: Leofoto LS-324C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod + Leofoto LH-40 Low Profile Ball Head is a surprisingly solid “hiking-friendly” setup if you also add an Arca-Swiss lens foot and keep the head tensioned.
Lesson learned: stability isn’t just carbon vs weight, it’s torsional stiffness + a good collar/foot… that’s where the wobble comes from, tbh. Under $800 used, this combo is usually doable. good luck!

I feel u — i tried a ball head first and almost dumped my whole rig once in gusty wind (seriously, NOT fun). Switched to a gimbal-ish setup and the big lesson was safety: tighten checks, strap/hand on the lens when moving, and dont cheap out on clamps.
+1 to the gimbal + beefier legs call — ngl it’s the move. For budget/value, check Benro TMA38CL Mach3 Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod + Benro GH2 Gimbal Head; also hang weight + turn OSS off on tripod in wind, seriously!!!
Seconding the gimbal + beefier legs advice — same experience here, got way more stable with bigger tubes. For a lighter hike-friendly setup, I’ve been happy with Gitzo Mountaineer Series 3 GT3533LS Carbon Fiber Tripod + Wimberley WH-200 II Gimbal Head (pricey new, but used kits sneak under $800). If you wanna stay ball head, the only one I’d trust w/ 200-600 is Really Right Stuff BH-55 Ballhead + an Arca lens foot… but tracking birds is still kinda meh lol
