Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Sony a6400 for an upcoming backpacking trip through Europe. I am absolutely loving the autofocus, but I am a bit worried about the battery life since it uses those smaller NP-FW50 batteries. Also, the body feels a little tiny for my hands during long shooting days.

I want to keep my kit as minimal as possible while staying prepared for different environments. I am already looking at a few things but really do not want to overpack my bag. If you had to narrow it down, what are the absolute must-haves?

  • Extra power solutions
  • A specific small grip or cage
  • A reliable travel strap

What are your top three essential travel accessories for the a6400?

Ive spent years backpacking with Sony gear and my best tip is about balance. Since the body is tiny, the Meike MK-A6300 Pro Battery Grip is a game changer. It fixes the ergonomics and doubles battery life in one go. Also, a Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap Black is much more practical for hiking than a dangling neck strap. Lastly, a Tiffen 40.5mm Variable ND Filter is essential for those bright European summer days.

Jumping in, grab Neewer NP-FW50 Replacement Battery 2-Pack with Charger for cheap power. The SmallRig Cage for Sony A6400 2310 fixes the grip, and USA Gear Neoprene Camera Strap is a budget win.

Honestly, since you are backpacking, safety and weight are everything. I dont go anywhere without my Peak Design Capture Camera Clip V3 because it keeps the camera from swinging into rocks while hiking. For power, I think the Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery is worth the extra cash for reliability over off-brands. Also, the SmallRig Cage for Sony A6400 1661 is great for protecting the body and adds some bulk to the grip.

Congrats on the a6400! Its a great travel cam but yeah, those batteries are tiny. I definitely recommend getting the Wasabi Power NP-FW50 2-Pack and Dual USB Charger to keep in your pack. For the grip issue, the SmallRig L-Bracket for Sony A6400 2331 adds just enough height for your pinky without adding bulk. Lastly, the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap SLL-BK-3 is super easy to adjust while you are on the move.

Hey! Since you're backpacking, grab an Anker 325 Power Bank PowerCore 20K to charge via micro-USB between locations. For the tiny body, the SmallRig Silicone Rubber Case 2517 adds some necessary thickness and grip without much weight. Also, look at the BlackRapid Cross Shot Breathe Camera Strap for a secure way to carry it all day without the usual neck strain. Its super practical for travel.
