Ive been shooting with my Sony A7R IV for years and usually I just lug around my old heavy Manfrotto but man my back is starting to kill me lately. Im planning this big solo trip to Iceland in three weeks and my logic was to finally invest in a proper carbon fiber travel tripod that doesnt feel like a wet noodle when the wind picks up.

I was looking at the Peak Design Carbon one because everyone raves about the form factor and how thin it is but then I saw some reviews saying it gets shaky with a heavier 24-70mm GM II lens especially when its extended. My use case is mostly long exposure landscapes so if it vibrates even a little bit its basically useless to me. Then I started thinking about the Ulanzi Zero Y or maybe some Leofoto stuff? I want something that fits inside or on the side of a medium Shimoda bag without being a total pain.

So I am stuck between getting something super light or something that can actually hold a full frame setup steady in 20mph gusts. Budget is ideally around $500 but I can go up to $650 if it really lasts. Do you guys think the center column design on the PD is actually a dealbreaker for sharpness or is there a better Benro or Sirui alternative I missed?

Iceland wind is basically the final boss for tripods. Honestly, I've been super satisfied with my move to specialized carbon fiber legs for my A7R IV recently. The Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber is definitely genius for packing, but that center column design can be a bit of a compromise for long exposures in heavy gusts. I found it picks up micro-vibrations when things get rowdy. If you want something rock solid, here is what has worked well for me:

  • Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod
  • I use this and I'm very happy with how it handles my 24-70mm GM. No center column means the apex is wider and stiffer.
  • Sirui Waterproof ST-124 Carbon Fiber Tripod
  • This one is great if you're hitting the black sand beaches since it's sealed against grit. Going for a setup without a center column is probably your best bet for sharpness in 20mph winds. I've been very happy with that trade-off since it fits easily on my Shimoda anyway.
