Ive been shooting on the A7III for about four years now and I usually stick to my 35mm and 85mm primes because I love the look but man, I am planning this 3-week trip through Vietnam and Cambodia next month and the thought of swapping lenses in the dust and humidity is already stressing me out. I need a solid one-lens solution that isnt going to break my back or my bank account.

Ive been looking at a few options but I cant decide if I should go for range or aperture. Here is what I am looking for:

  • Budget is around $1200 max, okay maybe a bit more if its really worth it
  • Must be weather sealed because monsoon season is no joke
  • Ideally starts at 24mm or wider because I do a lot of street and landscape stuff
  • Not a total brick. I'll be hiking quite a bit and dont want a sore neck

I looked at the Sony 24-105mm f4 G but I heard its getting a bit old and maybe the Tamron 28-200 is better for the reach? But then I lose that wide end which kind of sucks. Or maybe the new Sony 20-70mm? That 20mm sounds amazing for tight streets but 70mm feels a bit short for detail shots. What are you guys actually using for travel these days? Is the f2.8 vs f4 trade-off really that noticeable when youre just out and about during the day?

I have done the SE Asia circuit and the humidity there is a total nightmare for gear. If I were you, I would suggest going with the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS. People say it is getting old but it is still the safest bet for reliability and that built-in stabilization is a lifesaver when you are tired. Be careful about those third-party options tho; sometimes the weather sealing isnt as tight as the native glass, and in a monsoon, you really do not want to take any risks with your sensor. Quick tip: make sure to bring a dedicated dry bag for your kit and some silica packets. Better to be safe than sorry when those sudden downpours hit. The f4 is plenty for daylight, and the A7III handles high ISO so well you wont even miss the f2.8. Just stay safe and enjoy the trip!

I dragged a huge kit through Thailand years ago and my back still hates me! Switching to lighter f4 glass changed everything for my travel style.

  • Grab the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G because 20mm is legendary for those narrow SE Asia streets!
  • Modern sensors make f4 totally fine for day use. Honestly, Tamron is killing it lately, but that 20mm Sony is just special for landscapes.
