Hey everyone! I recently made the jump to the Sony Alpha 7 IV, and while I’m absolutely loving the 33MP sensor and the autofocus tracking, I’m struggling to pick the right 'everyday' lens. I’ve been using a couple of primes, but swapping them out while traveling or shooting fast-paced family events is becoming a bit of a headache. I’m really looking for a versatile zoom that can handle everything from wide landscape shots to decent portraits without feeling like a brick in my bag.

I’ve been eyeing the Sony 24-105mm f/4 G because of that extra reach, but I’m also leaning toward the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 since I do a fair amount of low-light shooting. I’m also curious if the Sigma 24-70mm Art is worth the extra weight for the image quality. Since I do a mix of photography and some casual 4K video, having a lens with quiet, snappy linear motors is a huge priority for me. My budget is somewhat flexible, but I’d prefer to keep it under $1,300 if possible. For those of you who have been using the A7 IV for a while, which versatile zoom lens do you think offers the best balance of sharpness, weight, and autofocus performance for a hybrid shooter?

Check out RTINGS for reliability ratings. Honestly, I'm satisfied with the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens for hybrid stuff. - Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G Lens: Safer for gimbals/weather sealing.
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art Lens: Pro quality but wierdly heavy.
- Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens: Good budget option. Go Sony for better durability. gl!

Seconding the recommendation above for the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2! Also check the Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G... market-wise, it's the best compact hybrid option with linear motors under budget!!

yo, late to the party but i feel u on the lens struggle. over the years ive tried basically every standard zoom for the E-mount system, and honestly, picking the "right" one is always a trade-off between weight and light. the Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is a total beast for landscapes cuz of that reach, but ngl, f/4 in a dark living room or at a family dinner is kinda rough. ur gonna be cranking that ISO way more than u want. If low light is a priority like u said, i would suggest the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. it’s about $899, which is well under ur $1,300 budget, leaving u cash for extra batteries or a mic. it’s way lighter than the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art and the VXD motors are seriously quiet for video. But, if u really need that 24mm width for landscapes, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is worth the extra weight. i find the image quality is just a step above the Tamron, though it does feel like a brick after 4 hours of shooting. Another sleeper pick for hybrid shooters is the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G. it's around $1,100... u lose the f/2.8, but 20mm is a game changer for handheld video and wide vistas. depends on what u value more—light or width!! gl with the choice

yo! honestly i went through this exact same thing last year when i first got my Sony Alpha 7 IV. i was literally so stressed about picking the "perfect" zoom because i hate carrying a heavy bag when i'm out with family but i also wanted those pro-looking shots. i ended up trying a few and here is what i found from my experience: 1. Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 - this is basically what i use 90% of the time now. it is sooo light compared to the others and the autofocus is seriously snappy and quiet for video thanks to those VXD motors. i was worried about missing the 24mm wide end, but honestly 28mm is usually fine for me. it's way better for low light than the f/4 sony too... i'm super happy with it. 2. Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS - i tried this one first because of that extra reach. it’s a great lens and super sharp, but f/4 was just kinda disappointing when we went inside for dinner or in darker rooms. if you mostly shoot outside during the day, you'll love it, but for "everyday" stuff, i found myself wanting more light pretty quickly. 3. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art - i borrowed this from a friend and ngl the image quality is *incredible*. but man... it’s a brick. i felt it in my shoulder after like 20 minutes of walking around. if you're doing professional portraits it's worth it, but for travel? probably not lol. so yeah, for your budget and the a7 iv, i'd highkey recommend the tamron g2. it hits that sweet spot of weight and performance and it fits your budget perfectly! gl with whatever you pick! 👍
