I recently upgraded to the Sony a7IV and I'm looking for a reliable external flash to pair with it. I mainly do event photography and some outdoor portraits, so having solid TTL performance and High-Speed Sync (HSS) is really important to me. I've been looking at the Sony HVL-F60RM2 for the native compatibility, but I've also heard great things about Godox models like the V1 or V860III which are much more affordable. I'm a bit torn on whether the native Sony flash is worth the extra cost for better AF assist or if third-party options are just as reliable. What are you all using with your a7IV, and what would you recommend for a balance of performance and price?

In my experience, you *really* dont need to drop $500+ on the native Sony flash unless you're like, a high-end pro who needs that 0.1% extra reliability. I'm still kinda new to using flashes on my Sony a7IV, but I went through this exact same dilemma. Basically, TTL (Through The Lens) is huge because it lets the camera talk to the flash and set the power automatically. For events, it's literally a lifesaver cuz lighting changes so fast... you dont wanna be fiddling with manual settings while people are dancing or whatever. HSS is the other big one—it lets you use fast shutter speeds outside so you can keep ur aperture wide open for that blurry background in portraits. I ended up getting the Godox V1-S Round Head Camera Flash for Sony and honestly? Im sooo happy with it. It was way cheaper than the Sony HVL-F60RM2 Wireless Radio Flash. I think the Godox AF assist is *kinda* hit or miss sometimes? but the a7IV has such insane autofocus anyway that I barely even notice it. Plus, the round head on the V1 gives such a natural, soft fall-off for portraits that looks way better than standard flashes imo. If you wanna save even more, the Godox V860III-S Flash for Sony is basically the same thing but with a square head. You're literally saving like $350 which you can spend on a nice prime lens or something lol. I've had zero issues with HSS not firing or anything weird like that. It just works well and the battery life is actually insane... i can go a whole wedding without swapping it. maybe that helps?

Honestly, I've spent years tracking gear reliability and unfortunately, third-party TTL is still a gamble. I had a Profoto A10 AirTTL-S glitch out mid-vow once, which was pretty soul-crushing. While Godox is cheap, the Sony HVL-F60RM2 is actually the pro standard for a7IV users. If ur doing paid events, don't risk the AF assist lag. The native integration is unfortunately worth the premium price tag. gl!

Just sharing my experience: I swapped to the Godox V860III-S Flash for Sony for $160 recently and honestly its been amazing. Solid HSS and saved me a fortune vs native!!

ok so congrats on the upgrade!! honestly i've used both native and third-party gear for my events for years. native is usually rock solid but pricey, while other brands are basically just as good for way less... i'd just be careful about AF assist reliability. To help you decide:
* what's ur actual budget for the setup?
* are you planning to do much off-camera work? tbh both have pros... lmk!!

Building on the earlier suggestion, it looks like weve got a classic battle between native reliability and third-party value. Ive been running this setup for a long time and honestly, both paths work fine as long as you know the limits. Heres the breakdown of what everyones saying:

  • Sony gear is the pro standard for AF assist and staying cool during long sets.
  • Godox is the king of budget and those lithium batteries are a lifesaver for all-day shoots. Quick tips for the a7IV:
  • If you go third-party, update the firmware immediately. It fixes most of those weird TTL glitches people complain about.
  • Always have a backup flash in your bag. A dead flash mid-vow is a nightmare. If you want something in between that hasnt been mentioned yet, check out the Westcott FJ80 II Speedlight for Sony. It has a great touchscreen and fits into a different ecosystem if you ever want to move away from Godox. Personally, I use the Sony HVL-F60RM2 Wireless Radio Flash for my main events because the menu integration is just so much smoother, but that Westcott unit is a sleeper hit for outdoor portraits... it just works.

I once had a budget flash basically melt while shooting a five hour event... so scary!! Now I stick with the Sony HVL-F46RM cuz the reliability is worth the extra cash, I guess. Quick tip: prioritize thermal safety over price so you dont end up with a dead flash mid-shoot like I did!! Peace.

> I'm a bit torn on whether the native Sony flash is worth the extra cost for better AF assist or if third-party options are just as reliable. I went through this exact same struggle when I first got my a7IV! Tbh I ended up going with the Godox TT685II-S because I'm more of a budget-conscious user, and I've been using it for over a year now for family events and outdoor shots without any major issues. If you're worried about the technical side, I highly recommend checking out the "Flash Havoc" website—it’s a great resource for comparing the actual specs and compatibility quirks between brands. Also, the "Strobist" Lighting 101 guide is basically the bible for learning how to actually use these things effectively. One thing I've noticed after a year is that the AF assist on third-party flashes can be a bit hit-or-miss on mirrorless cameras anyway because of how the sensor tech works. If you want something a bit more modern but not as pricey as Sony, maybe look into the Westcott FJ80 II M Universal Speedlight. It has a super easy touchscreen which helped me a lot since I'm still learning the ropes. Idk if the native ones are truly worth 3x the price for a practical setup, but that’s just my experience so far!
