Which mic is actually gonna give me the best sound on my Sony A7IV without costing a fortune?

Ive been looking at the Sony ECM-B1M because that cableless digital shoe thing seems super handy but Im also seeing everyone rave about the Rode VideoMic Pro+. Honestly Im just so frustrated with my current setup because the cables keep snagging on my gimbal and ruining shots. I have a wedding shoot in Chicago next weekend so I need to decide like today. Budget is strictly under $350. Is the Sony digital interface really that much better or should I stick with the tried and true Rode? Im leaning toward the Sony just to ditch the wires...

If your cables are snagging on your gimbal, definitely ditch the Rode. The Sony digital interface is legit because it saves so much setup time.

  • Sony ECM-B10 Compact Shotgun Microphone is basically the B1M but cheaper.
  • No wires means no balancing issues on your gimbal.
  • Sound quality is solid for the price. I switched to the B10 for travel and it works great without the bulk.

Are you shooting mostly indoor ceremonies or a loud reception? Chicago venues can be tricky. Before you commit, make sure to be careful with the digital shoe interface:

  • Keep the pins on the Sony ECM-M1 Four-Capsule Shotgun clean.
  • I would suggest checking for physical play in the mount while on your gimbal. Reliability with those pins is a major concern for me, tbh.

Just saw this thread! Honestly, I am super satisfied with my switch to the digital shoe system. I used to struggle with 3.5mm cables snagging on my gimbal, but the one I got recently works well without any extra wires.

  • Digital signal bypasses the noisy preamps
  • Balancing is way faster now Tbh, Sony's proprietary ecosystem feels more integrated than third-party options right now. You wont regret the cleaner workflow.
