I'm looking to upgrade from my kit lens on my Sony a6400 but don't want to break the bank. I mainly shoot street photography and portraits. I’ve been looking at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the Sony 50mm f/1.8. Between those two or any others under $300, what would you recommend for the best value?

Curious about one thing: which do ur shots lean toward more, street or portraits? Tbh, they're technically very different. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E is a 45mm equivalent—GREAT for street. But the Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS is a 75mm equivalent, basically total PERFECTION for portraits but maybe too tight for street? Do u find urself zoomed in mostly on ur kit lens?

sooo, I would suggest checking out the TTArtisan 35mm f/1.8 AF Lens for Sony E for a real budget win. It’s like $150, which is wild for the quality!! It’s great for street stuff. If you want a bit more for portraits, maybe the Viltrox AF 33mm f/1.4 E for Sony E-mount? It’s usually under $250. Just be careful with autofocus speed on these cheaper ones... but for value, they’re hard to beat tbh. gl!

+1 to what was said earlier about the reliability! Honestly, Sigma is basically killing it in the APS-C market right now. Just catching up on the thread and I gotta say, you really cant go wrong with any of the newer primes from the major third-party brands. I mean, the technical specs you get for under $300 are wild compared to what we had a few years ago. In my experience, you should definitely:
- Stick with the big third-party manufacturers for the best price-to-performance ratio
- Look for brands that offer consistent firmware updates to keep the AF snappy
- Go for a fast aperture if ur doing portraits; it makes a huge difference I've been super satisfied with my third-party glass on my a6400. The eye-AF works flawlessly and the sharpness is basically pro-level for way less cash. Just get any fast prime from those guys and youll be set for both street and portraits. peace

Honestly, in my experience, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E is the safest long-term investment for under $300. Its way more reliable than generic brands because of the consistent firmware support and build quality. You can usually find it for around $289. The AF is snappy and dependable for both street and portraits... basically, it is a solid, industry-standard option that just works. gl!
