I recently made the jump to a Sony A7 IV and I am looking to transition from my heavy zoom lenses to some high-quality primes. I mainly focus on street photography and portraits, so I have been looking closely at 35mm and 85mm options.

With so many choices between the Sony G Master series, Sigma Art, and even the compact Samyang lenses, I am a bit overwhelmed. I am looking for something with fast autofocus and that beautiful bokeh, but I want to make sure I am getting the best value for my money.

For those of you shooting on Sony full-frame bodies, what are your must-have prime lenses that stay in your bag for every shoot?

In my experience, I once had a lens fail during a damp street shoot, so ngl, I only trust pro-grade sealing now. I am so satisfied with the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM and Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM cuz their sealing is top-tier. Its worth the premium since reliable gear is highkey the best insurance you can have!!

Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, those third-party brands are so good now you really dont need to drop the big bucks on first-party glass for pro results. Just get any prime from Samyang and you'll basically be set! But be careful and make sure to check for decent weather sealing.

  • buy used to save more
  • stick to third-party brands What is ur actual budget range though??

For your situation, i would suggest looking at the sigma art lineup for those 35mm and 85mm focal lengths. i think they offer the best market value. i once compared the af motors on a shoot and iirc the native brand glass uses faster linear motors, which helps for tracking. honestly tho, just be careful with samyang cuz i heard their qc can vary a lot... gl!!

For your situation, I totally get the struggle. I moved from zooms to primes on my Sony too and honestly havent looked back. IIRC, the Sigma options are basically just as good as the G Master stuff. I got their 35 and 85 Art lenses for way less cash and they work like so well for street stuff. Not 100% sure if the weight is gonna bother u tho, but the value is highkey insane lol.
