What's the best external monitor for the Sony a7S III for handheld gimbal work? I looked at the Ninja V for ProRes RAW but heard it's way too heavy and the fan noise is a nightmare for audio. I've got $600 for my Chicago shoot next month so maybe a Shinobi is better...

Quick reply while I have a sec. Are you looking for something with camera control, or just a display? Because if you're on a gimbal, touching the camera to hit record is a total pain and can mess with your balance. Tbh, if you want something lightweight that beats the Shinobi on features, look at the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5-inch 2200nit Touchscreen Monitor. It's right in your budget and has 2200 nits of brightness, which is massive for outdoor shoots in Chicago. The best part tho is the wireless control for your Sony. You can adjust settings and trigger recording right from the monitor screen. It's built out of aluminum but still feels way lighter than any recorder. Might be worth checking out if you want to keep the gimbal setup nimble.

I used the Atomos Shinobi 5-inch 4K HDMI Monitor for a while and it is basically the same screen but way lighter since there is no recorder inside. It stays cool and silent which helps with your audio concerns. Another solid pick is the Portkeys PT6 5.2-inch 4K HDMI Monitor. It is much cheaper than the Atomos and has some cool features like 3D LUT output. It feels a bit more plasticky tho... For gimbal work, the Shinobi is probably the best fit for the a7S III. Its bright enough for outdoor shoots in Chicago and wont throw off your balance like a heavier rig. The Ninja is only worth it if you actually need RAW, but most the time the internal 10-bit on the Sony is plenty.
