So i just got a sony a6000 used from a friend and i really want to take pictures of my son playing soccer but the lens it came with just doesnt zoom in far enough. i can barely see him on the screen when he is on the other side of the field lol. i have been looking online but honestly all these numbers like 70-300mm and 55-210mm are just making my head spin and i have no clue what is actually good or if it will even fit my camera since im still a total beginner at this stuff.

i am looking for something that is:

  • cheap as possible because i spent most of my money on the camera itself
  • easy to use because i am still learning what all the buttons do
  • good for taking pictures from far away
  • i guess under 400 or 500 dollars if that is even possible?

i saw something about full frame lenses too and i dont know if those work on my camera or if i need a specific type of e-mount thing. is there a big difference between the sony brand ones and the other ones like tamron? my neighbor said something about sigma but i dont want to buy something that breaks the camera or doesnt autofocus right. i really just want to be able to see his face when he's running down the field. if anyone knows a good starter lens for someone who has no idea what they are doing...

I agree with the point about stabilization, it is essential for sports. Native Sony glass has always provided great satisfaction because the electronic communication is so reliable. You dont need to worry about damaging your camera with third party brands tho. Finding a used Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS would be the dream for your budget. The autofocus tracking is methodical and works perfectly for tracking soccer players.

Stumbled on this while browsing today. Since you are shooting your sons soccer games, you really gotta be careful about one thing: stabilization. Your a6000 doesnt have it built into the camera body, so you definitely want a lens that has it built-in. Sony calls this OSS. If you get a lens without it, those long distance shots are gonna be super shaky and blurry, especially since you are just starting out. I would suggest looking for a used Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS. I know it sounds like a lot of numbers, but the 350mm part means it zooms in way further than what you have now. It might be right at the top of your 500 dollar budget if you find a good deal on eBay or a used camera site, but the image quality is night and day compared to the cheaper kit lenses. Plus it has that stabilization I mentioned which is a lifesaver. Also, just a heads up on the full frame thing... those lenses (marked FE) will technically fit and work perfectly fine on your camera, but they are usually way bigger and more expensive. You are better off sticking to lenses made for APS-C sensors to keep the weight down. If you want something a bit more versatile, the Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD is a solid alternative. It lets you take close shots and far away shots without ever changing the lens. Just make sure to double check it says E-mount before you buy anything so you dont end up with a lens that wont attach.

Just jumped in! The Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS LE is amazing.

  • 11x magnification range
  • 27-300mm focal equivalent
  • ED glass elements Love these specs for a starter budget!

Honestly, i was super satisfied with the Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS when i first started out. Its usually the cheapest option and works well for soccer. If you can stretch the budget tho, the Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD gives way more zoom.

  • the sony is light and budget friendly
  • the tamron gets you way closer to the action Both will autofocus perfectly on your a6000 so you wont have issues there!
