Best mic for vlogging with my a7CR? Looking for something compact. Budget's around $200. Any recommendations?

Honestly, since you are using an a7CR, you really ought to stick with Sonys proprietary MI shoe. Over the years, Ive seen way too many shoots ruined by a loose 3.5mm jack or a frayed cable. I have been using the Sony ECM-B10 Digital Shotgun Microphone for a while now and the reliability is unmatched because there are literally no wires to snag. The digital interface sends the audio directly to the camera, which prevents that annoying hiss you get from cheap analog preamps. It has multiple pickup patterns too, which is helpful if you are switching between vlogging and recording b-roll. If you want something even smaller to match the compact nature of your camera body, look at the Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone. It is extremely low profile and wont block your screen. Investing in the proprietary ecosystem might cost a bit more but it saves you from technical failures in the field. Nothing is worse than getting home and realizing your mic cable wasnt pushed in all the way.

In my experience, wires are just trouble waiting to happen on a vlogging rig. Ive seen so many people ruin their camera's mic jack by snagging a cable while moving around. Since you want to stay under $200, check out the Sony ECM-XYST1M Stereo Microphone. It uses the MI shoe so there are no messy cables to deal with, and the stereo field is actually quite nice for capturing ambient sound while you talk. It's a solid, reliable choice for the price and fits that compact requirement perfectly. Honestly, the a7CR is so sleek it makes me think back to when I first started out with a heavy DSLR and a massive external recorder... my neck still hasn't forgiven me for those 12-hour wedding shoots back in the day. It's crazy how much tech they can cram into these tiny bodies now. I remember lugging a whole suitcase of gear just to get half the quality we get now. Anyway, sticking to the shoe-mount stuff will save you a lot of headaches and potential repair bills. But yeah.

Nice, didn't know that

Hey! I actually use the Rode VideoMicro with my setup. Super compact, right? Plugs straight in. I think I got it for around $60? Sound quality's decent for basic vlogging – definitely better than the camera's built-in mic. Wind noise can be an issue, though, so maybe factor in a deadcat wind muff. It works for me, but depends what you're recording!

Honestly, Rode VideoMicro is decent enough for the price. Don't blow your budget. I had issues with fancier mics. Under $60 and super compact.

Instead of a mic, consider a digital audio recorder like a Zoom H1n. Plugs directly into your a7CR. Audio quality is noticeably better, and it's around $100. Downside? Another device to manage, but worth the hassle for cleaner sound, especially outdoors. Just sync audio in post.

Before dropping cash, have you considered DIY? I've built surprisingly decent shotgun mics for under $50! Check YouTube for "DIY microphone phantom power" – tons of tutorials. It's fiddly, but satisfying. If that fails, Rode VideoMicro is compact and gets the job done.

Rode VideoMicro is okay, but secure mounting is key! A dropped mic is a dangerous distraction.

Rode's marketing is strong, but for $200, consider Deity. I had issues with Rode's build quality; Deity's durability seems better, based on forums.
