What are the best external microphones for Sony A7IV?

What are the best external microphones for the Sony A7IV that wont give me that annoying floor hiss? I'm honestly stumped because I've been shooting video for about five years now and never had this much trouble getting clean audio on my older bodies. I just upgraded to the A7IV from an a6400 and for some reason my old trusty Rode VideoMic GO is sounding super thin and noisy even when I pull the in-camera levels way down to like 5 or 6.

I have a huge outdoor ceremony shoot this coming Saturday at a cliffside venue in Big Sur so I'm literally panicking about the wind noise and the timeline. I have about $350 maybe $400 to spend if it really makes a difference but I need to buy it tonight to get it here in time. I was looking at the Sony ECM-B1M or maybe the B10 because I heard they use the digital interface in the hot shoe which sounds great since I hate cables getting caught in my Ronin-S gimbal but I've heard mixed things about how they handle heavy gusts even with a deadcat. Should I just bite the bullet and get a proper XLR shotgun with an adapter or is there a better plug-and-play option I'm missing? I really need something that can isolate voices while we're outside on the coast...

Yeah that digital connection is a game changer! if you cant find that one tho, im absolutely obsessed with the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Shotgun Microphone. I used it for a windy beach wedding last season and that built-in safety channel was a total lifesaver when those random gusts hit mid-vows. Just crank the mic gain and keep your A7IV levels at 1... literally no hiss at all!

Jumping in to agree with the point about the digital shoe... staying digital is really the only way to kill that floor noise entirely. If you dont want to mess with cables on your gimbal, check out the Sony ECM-M1 All-Pattern Shotgun Microphone. It's really technical with eight different pickup modes on a dial. For your cliffside shoot, the ultra-directional mode is technically your best bet for isolating voices because it uses beamforming tech to squash side noise. Honestly tho, wind is gonna be your biggest enemy there. If you go this route, ditch the stock windjammer and grab a Rycote 5cm SGM Foam and Windjammer. The digital connection via the MI shoe is way more reliable than a 3.5mm jack that can wiggle loose on a gimbal. Plus you get 4-channel recording options which is great for safety tracks if the gusts get too loud, tbh.

@Reply #4 - good point! Honestly, switching to native tech changed everything for me. I did a cliffside gig last month and learned so much:

  • Proprietary digital connections beat standard brands every time for hiss.
  • Sony is way ahead of the market with their shoe-integrated processing!
  • I love how my current setup works without any cables catching. It was a total game changer and the audio was just amazing despite the wind... srsly worth it!

TL;DR: I would suggest the Sony ECM-W3 Dual Channel Wireless Microphone instead of a shotgun. Since it's digital via the shoe, you avoid the hiss, and putting a lav on the subject is much safer for wind. Be careful to use the included deadcats tho. I once spent a weekend in Big Sur photographing condors and lost my favorite hat to the wind... totally ruined the vibe of the trip. But yeah, wireless is usually better for cliffside ceremonies.

I would suggest the Sony ECM-B1M Digital Shotgun Microphone to bypass internal preamps. Be careful though, you might want to consider a better windjammer since the default foam wont handle cliffside gusts.
