Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Sony a6400 and I’m really looking forward to getting more serious about street photography. I’ve been playing around with the kit lens for a few weeks, but I’m definitely feeling the limitations, especially when the light starts to fade or when I want a bit more subject separation. I’m ready to invest in my first high-quality prime lens, but I’m torn on which focal length makes the most sense for the APS-C sensor.

I’ve been eyeing the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 because the reviews on its sharpness are incredible, but I’m slightly worried that 45mm equivalent might be a bit too narrow for tight alleyways. On the other hand, the Sony 35mm f/1.8 is tempting because it has Optical Steady Shot (OSS), which seems helpful since the a6400 doesn't have in-body stabilization. I’ve also considered something wider like a 20mm pancake lens to keep the setup as tiny and discreet as possible for candid shots.

I really want a lens that is fast enough for evening walks but portable enough to carry all day without a heavy bag. My budget is around $400-$500. For those of you shooting street with the a6400, which prime lens do you find gives you the best balance of field of view and character?

For your situation, I’ve gotta say the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens is literally the safest bet. I know everyone raves about the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E, and honestly, its amazing for sharpness, but since the Sony Alpha a6400 Mirrorless Camera doesnt have IBIS, you reallyyy want that Optical Steady Shot (OSS). It saves sooo many shots when your walking at night! If you go with the Sigma, you risk blurry photos if ur hands arent rock steady, which is basically a nightmare for street stuff... very risky. Tbh, the 35mm is a classic look, but if you want something wider, the Sony E 20mm f/2.8 Lens pancake is tiny, but you lose that sweet f/1.8 low-light magic. Seriously, stick with the Sony 35mm for reliability. Its light, fast, and that stabilization is a total lifesaver for evening walks!! gl!

So basically the consensus is to buy used... tbh thats the smartest move. The market is flooded with cheap glass, so if ur worried about the 35mm mentioned earlier being too tight, try the Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 E for Sony E-mount. It's a HUGE bargain at $300, but unfortunately, I had focus issues on mine. Third-party QC is such a gamble!! Just be careful where u buy from. gl!

Stumbled upon this discussion and man, I feel u. Choosing that first prime is a total hurdle!! Before I give advice, I’m curious about one thing: what's your actual shooting style like? Are you more into wide environmental scenes or those intimate "soul of the city" candid portraits? I've tried many setups on APS-C over the years, and honestly, the focal length choice is SO personal. I'm not 100% sure about stabilization being a total dealbreaker for street work... iirc, if you're shooting fast enough to freeze people moving, it basically doesnt matter anyway. • Have you considered a 24mm? It's basically the "goldilocks" zone—not too tight, but wider than a thirty-five. • Think about how much you shoot in REALLY dark spots. Moving from f/2.8 to f/1.4 is a MASSIVE jump for evening walks.
• Is being "discreet" highkey the priority? Some tiny lenses make the camera look like a toy, which is great for being invisible. Lmk those bits and I can give you a better steer! tbh, I've been there and it's a tough call lol. Cheers.

sooo true about the stabilization, i totally agree it's a lifesaver!! I went through this last year and basically hunted for a used f/1.4 to save like $150. My value tips:
* Check used listings first
* Use savings for extra batteries Honestly, the used market is king if youre trying to maximize your budget... plus it makes the whole kit feel like a total steal!!
