I've been using my Canon EOS R50 V for video work and really need to upgrade the audio quality. The built-in mic just isn't cutting it anymore. I'm looking for external microphone recommendations that work well with this camera - whether shotgun mics, lavaliers, or wireless systems. Budget is flexible but preferably under $500. What mics have you had good experiences with on the R50? Any mounting or compatibility issues I should be aware of? Appreciate any suggestions!

Upgrading your R50's audio is a smart move for video. Many users have had great experiences with the Rode VideoMic GO II for its compact size, clear sound, and plug-in power (no batteries needed for the mic itself). The Sennheiser MKE 400 (2nd Gen) is another excellent shotgun mic, offering good control and built-in wind protection. For wireless options, the Rode Wireless GO II and DJI Mic systems are highly recommended. They both offer dual-channel recording and excellent portability. The DJI Mic is particularly praised for its charging case and user-friendly interface. The R50 has a standard 3.5mm microphone input, so most external mics will connect easily with a TRS cable. Canon's own DM-E1D connects directly to the Multi-Function Shoe for a cable-free digital audio connection. Some users have reported initial power issues with the Rode VideoMic Go II, but often a camera restart with the mic plugged in resolves it. Ensure you use a TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) cable for external mics, not a TRRS cable (often for smartphones).
