Hey! Looking for mic recommendations for my EOS R5 for vlogging car stuff. Mostly engine sounds and in-cabin audio. Budget's around $300. What's a good external mic for that kind of recording?

I've spent years tracking my cars and trying to capture that perfect exhaust note without it sounding like a distorted mess on my R5. Honestly, the biggest lesson I learned early on wasn't about spending the full $300, but about managing SPL (sound pressure levels) so the mic doesn't clip when you're high in the rev range. I've been using the Sennheiser+MKE+400&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 for a while now, and it's been a tank. The built-in -20dB pad is basically a lifesaver for loud engine bays. I actually found mine refurbished for like half the retail price, which left me enough room in the budget for a high-quality deadcat and some long 3.5mm extension cables to get the mic closer to the muffler. If you gain stage it properly in the R5 settings—keeping the camera's manual gain low—you get way cleaner transients than just throwing a cheap mic on top and hoping for the best!!!

Hey! For in-cabin and engine sounds, I've been happy with the Rode VideoMicro. It's super simple and works well for my needs. I've used it for a couple of years now and honestly, no complaints. It's usually under $100. Does your R5 have a mic input? Just making sure!

Consider a Tascam DR-10L lavalier. S/N ratio is 70dB; ideal for in-cabin audio.

Rode's fine, but for lasting value, research Deity. Better audio for the buck, IMO.

Rode VideoMicro is fantastic! Super cheap, like $60, and way better than onboard mics. Worth a shot!

Hey! For in-car audio, consider a Rode VideoMic GO II. Great sound, but more importantly, SECURE mounting is key! I've seen mics fly off during spirited driving – seriously dangerous. Double-check your mount's stability; it could save a windshield (or worse!). Don't skimp on a solid mount for safety's sake!
