I'm trying to build a computer for my little brother for his birthday next month and i only have 800 bucks to spend but prices are just jumping all over the place. I have like 20 tabs open on chrome and i keep refreshing them every ten minutes to see if the gpu dropped in price and my head is spinning lol. Someone told me there are things you can install on your browser that track prices for you and send alerts? Im so lost and dont want to get scammed or download something bad.

Sorry if this is a really basic question but what is the best chrome extension for tracking pc part prices across different sites so i dont miss a deal?

Last year when I was putting together a new workstation, I was in the same boat as you, refreshing pages every hour like a madman. I was trying to stay under a strict cap for my build and the data was just too much to handle manually. I eventually switched to using automated tools and it was a total game changer for my stress levels. Honestly, I have been very satisfied with the results.

  • PCPartPicker for the initial build list and compatibility checks
  • Keepa to see the long-term price history on Amazon specifically
  • PriceDropCatch which is what I used to get real-time pings when things dropped It works well because you can set a target price and just get a notification when it hits. No more manual refreshing. Setting up a threshold alert is definitely the way to go so you dont miss the window when a seller drops their price for a few hours... it definitely saved my sanity during that build.

@Reply #2 - good point! Just be careful about privacy permissions when you install stuff. I usually use PriceDropCatch for specific components because it doesnt bloat the browser. Quick questions:

  • Does that 800 budget include the monitor or just the tower?
  • Are you looking for a specific GPU model or just anything that fits the budget?

Catching up on this thread now. Managing 20 tabs for a 800 dollar build is a lot of overhead. If you want the most technical accuracy, you need to look at price history data rather than just real-time pings because prices often fluctuate in cycles.

  • Keepa is basically the gold standard for Amazon. It embeds a data graph directly into the page that shows you the price history for the last year. It helps you spot when a price is artificially inflated before a sale.
  • CamelCamelCamel is another solid option, though their extension isnt quite as integrated as Keepas overlay.
  • For general hardware, using this Newegg price tracker helps quite a bit with inventory monitoring since Newegg often has different stock cycles than Amazon. One quick tip is to prioritize tools that allow for specific price-drop thresholds. Dont just set it to any drop or your phone will blow up with 1 dollar changes. Set your alert for your actual target price minus shipping costs. The technical side of these extensions is pretty straightforward, they mostly just scrape HTML or use API calls. Just make sure you check the permissions before installing. If you need a breakdown of which GPUs are actually worth it for that 800 total budget right now, just ask... its a tricky price point for the current market.
