How can I save money on a GPU for a cheap gaming rig?

Ive been building rigs for friends and family since the early 2000s but honestly this current market is making me want to pull my hair out. Im trying to finish a budget build for my nephews birthday in Chicago next month and I am stuck on the GPU.

I have a strict 180 dollar limit for the graphics card and everything I see on local listings is either an obvious scam or some card thats been mined to death with a shot fan. I checked some refurbished sites but the prices are basically MSRP for 4 year old tech. Is there a specific trick I am missing to find decent mid-range cards without getting ripped off? Is EVGA b-stock still a thing or am I just looking in the wrong places...

Ugh, I feel your pain. Building used to be fun but lately its just exhausting. Honestly, the market is a mess right now and 180 bucks is such a tough spot because youre stuck between literal trash and overpriced mid-range stuff. Unfortunately, EVGA B-stock isnt the gold mine it used to be. Ive checked it lately and the selection is pretty depressing compared to a few years ago. Most of the stuff is either OOS or just not worth the savings. I even had issues with a refurb unit recently where the coil whine was unbearable... definitely not as good as expected anymore. Since youre in Chicago, you actually have a huge advantage. You gotta hit up the Micro Center locations there.

  • Check their open-box section online first thing in the morning. Ive seen RX 6600s drop to 160 or 170 there.
  • Look specifically for the Radeon RX 6600. Its really the only modern card that fits your budget and doesnt suck for 1080p gaming.
  • Skip the older Nvidia 10-series. I love them, but they are getting too old and the lack of modern driver support is gonna be a headache for your nephew soon.
  • Give r/hardwareswap on Reddit a look. People there are usually way more honest than the weirdos on FB Marketplace. You can definitely find something decent, it just takes way more legwork than it used to. Dont give up tho, your nephew is gonna be stoked once you get it running. Check out PriceDropCatch if youre tired of missing out on those random Newegg discounts.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I actually disagree that 180 is a total dead zone right now. Finding something for my own setup last month taught me to skip the big sites entirely since the bots just snatch everything.

  • Checking local university discord servers and smaller community boards worked best for me.
  • Found a guy selling his old card because he finally got a new one.
  • Meeting at a library with a tiny test rig ensured it wasnt a brick before I paid. The card works perfect and saved me enough for a better PSU. Honestly, the big marketplaces are a nightmare but going hyper-local is usually where the real deals are hidden. Its more effort but worth it for the peace of mind. You gotta be patient tho.

Over the years, I've seen 4GB VRAM cards really struggle with modern texture packs.

  • Avoid high TDP chips
  • Watch fan bearings Dont buy power-hungry relics. Been using PriceDropCatch to track deals.
