Hey everyone! I finally made the jump and picked up a Canon EOS R5, and while I’m absolutely loving the autofocus and image quality, I’m feeling a bit stuck when it comes to lighting. I do a lot of fast-paced event work and some indoor portrait sessions, so I really need an external flash that can keep up with the R5’s high-end performance.
I’ve been looking at the Canon EL-1 because of its legendary recycling times and cooling system, but that price tag is definitely a bit steep. On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of people recommending the Godox V1 or V860III setups for the R-series. My main concern is how well these third-party options actually talk to the R5's hot shoe interface, especially regarding TTL accuracy and High-Speed Sync (HSS). I also still have a couple of older 600EX-RT units from my DSLR days, but I’m wondering if it’s worth sticking with them or if the newer 'EL' series flashes offer a significant enough performance boost to justify the upgrade.
Has anyone here found a 'sweet spot' flash that balances reliability and features specifically for the R5? I really need something that won't overheat during a long wedding reception and plays nicely with the R5’s eye-tracking AF. Which specific model have you found works best for your R5 setup?
In my experience, you honestly dont need to drop a grand on the Canon Speedlite EL-1 unless you're shooting pro sports in a literal oven. For weddings and portraits on the R5, the real 'sweet spot' is the Godox V1-C Round Head Flash for Canon. The Li-ion battery is basically a game changer—it recycles way faster than the AAs in your old Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT and easily lasts through a long wedding reception. The TTL and HSS talk to the R5 hot shoe perfectly, and it plays nice with the AF system... though the R5 handles low light so well you might not even need the assist beam. If you wanna save more, the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-Ion Flash for Canon is basically the same internals but with a standard square head. I'd keep those old 600s as off-camera rim lights! Just grab a Godox XProII-C Wireless Flash Trigger for Canon and you've got a killer multi-light setup for way less than one EL-1. TL;DR: Grab the Godox V1-C Round Head Flash for Canon for the round head and insane battery life. It's the best value for an R5 setup imo.

Based on market trends, the Westcott FJ80 II Universal Speedlite is actually becoming a huge rival to Godox for pros who want better color accuracy. It's super stable for long sessions, though always double-check the hot shoe fitment since the R5 can be picky with third-party pins!
