Are third-party batteries safe for Fujifilm cameras or should I buy OEM?

So Ive been shooting Fuji since the X-T2 days and never really thought twice about using those cheap Wasabi or Neewer packs but I just upgraded to the X-T5 and man these NP-W235 batteries are insanely pricey. Im looking at like 80 bucks a pop at B&H and I honestly cant afford that right now after dropping two grand on the body. I have a huge wedding gig in Lake Tahoe next weekend and Im panicking because I only have the one battery that came in the box.

Ive heard horror stories about third-party batteries swelling and getting stuck in the chamber or even worse causing voltage spikes that fry the IBIS system. I really need at least 3 or 4 more spares to get through a 10-hour day but my budget is strictly under $100 for the whole lot.

My constraints are:

  • Must not overheat during 4k video bursts
  • Needs to show accurate percentage on the UI
  • Fast shipping to California before Friday
  • Under $30 per unit if possible

Is the risk of bricking a brand new $1700 camera worth saving sixty bucks? Or are brands like SmallRig or Nitecore actually reliable enough for professional work these days? Im seeing mixed reviews about the camera throwing battery age errors with non-OEM stuff and I really dont want the camera cutting out during the ceremony or something...

Agree about the chips. Im satisfied with these:

Voltage regulation on the K&F Concept NP-W235 2250mAh Battery is basically fantastic! My stress tests last month showed a discharge curve nearly identical to Fuji originals. Love seeing that technical precision even in third-party cells!

  • Integrated safety chips prevent overcharging and thermal runaway.
  • Fully decoded so you dont get those annoying UI errors.
  • Ships fast so youll definitely have them by Friday.

Saw this earlier and figured I would chime in. I am usually very satisfied with how the higher-end third-party cells perform, but I am definitely a more conservative user when it comes to paid gigs. The X-T5 is way more sensitive to power draw than the older bodies, so being methodical about what you put in the chamber is a good idea.

  • Voltage stability is my biggest concern during long video bursts or when IBIS is working hard.
  • Newer chips mimic the OEM data well enough to show percentages, but they can be a bit jumpy.
  • Casing quality varies, so I always check for any signs of expansion before a big shoot. I am not 100% sure if the latest firmware has started blocking these more aggressively, but I think I heard someone mention a yellow warning icon popping up recently. IIRC it just warns you about battery age rather than shutting down. Honestly, I have had no complaints using them for personal work, but for a wedding, the risk feels higher. Maybe just mix and match so you have one reliable OEM for the ceremony?

Been using third-party batteries in my Fuji gear for years and honestly, I have zero complaints. For the X-T5 specifically, you just need batteries with the updated chips so the camera dont throw a fit about battery age or compatibility. I am really satisfied with the current third-party options because they perform just as well as the Fuji ones for way less money. These cells have survived long wedding days in the heat and they havent let me down once. Check these out if you want reliability:

  • SmallRig NP-W235 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery 2400mAh
  • This is basically the gold standard for third-party right now. The built-in USB-C port is a literal lifesaver when you need to top off a cell in your gear bag while shooting.
  • Nitecore NP-W235 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery
  • Very reliable and shows the accurate percentage on the UI without any annoying pop-ups.
  • Wasabi Power NP-W235 Battery 2-Pack with Dual USB Charger
  • If you just need raw volume for cheap, these are still the go-to, tho they might run a tiny bit warmer during long 4k clips compared to the SmallRig. The fear about bricking a camera is mostly overblown as long as you buy from reputable brands like these. My X-T5 has handled massive 4k video bursts using the SmallRig cells without swelling or causing any weird voltage issues. Since you are in California, you can probably get a couple of the SmallRig ones delivered by Wednesday. It really beats paying eighty bucks for the Fuji sticker on the side... definitely worth the savings imo.
