Im seriously so annoyed right now. I finally saved up for the XF 33mm f1.4 because everyone says it is the sharpest thing ever but every shot I take looks like garbage. Ive been using this cheap kit filter I found in a drawer and it is literally killing the contrast. I was out at Discovery Park here in Seattle yesterday trying to get some sunset shots and the ghosting was just... ugh. It is embarrassing. I spent all this money on a high-end Fuji body and glass just to have a $10 piece of glass on the front ruin the whole vibe.

I tried taking the filter off and the shots are night and day better but Im terrified of scratching the front element because Im kinda clumsy and I am headed to Switzerland for a hiking trip in like ten days. I need something that actually protects the lens without making my photos look like they were shot through a greasy window. Ive looked at B+W and Hoya but there are so many versions it is confusing as hell. Some people say get a protector, others say UV, and honestly I just want something that does not flare like crazy the second a light hits it. I also noticed that the cheap filter I have right now is a total pain to clean. Every time I try to wipe a smudge off it just smears around and makes it worse which is the last thing I want to deal with when I am out on a trail.

I have about $120 to spend on this if I have to but I would rather not get ripped off on something that is just a brand name with no actual quality. Is there a specific brand or model that you guys actually trust on your Fuji glass? Like what wont mess with the colors or that micro-contrast everyone talks about? Im honestly so close to just going filterless and praying I dont drop the thing on a rock but that feels like a bad idea... what should I actually buy that is not gonna ruin my trip photos?

^ This. Also, had a moment to think about this more while looking at my own Fuji gear. I totally get the anxiety about scratching that front glass, especially on a big trip like Switzerland. I once took a cheap UV filter to the Alps and every sunrise shot had these weird purple ghosts because of the reflections. It was a total nightmare to edit out. If you want to avoid that mess, I would suggest looking at these two specifically:

  • B+W 58mm Master Clear MRC Nano 007M
  • These use a brass frame so they wont get stuck on your lens when the weather gets cold. The Nano coating is the real deal; fingerprints just wipe off without that annoying smearing you are dealing with now.
  • Marumi 58mm Exus Lens Protect Solid
  • These are super underrated and arguably the best value. They are built with extra-strong glass and have an antistatic coating. Might want to consider this if you are genuinely worried about dropping the camera on rocks while hiking. Just be careful and avoid any UV filter that doesnt explicitly say it has multi-resistant coatings. The uncoated ones are what cause that greasy window look you hate. Honestly, for that 33mm f1.4, you need the high-end stuff to keep the sharpness. Lmk if you need more help finding a shop that ships before your flight!

Building on the earlier suggestion, just get any B+W Filter. Their technical specs are solid for reliability.

  • 99% light transmission
  • Brass construction It works well for trail protection.
