Hey everyone! I’ve recently fully committed to the Fujifilm ecosystem after switching over from a bulky DSLR setup, and I’m absolutely loving the tactile experience of my X-T5. However, I’ve hit a bit of a roadblock. My old gear bags and my heavy aluminum tripod now feel completely disproportionate to the compact size of my Fuji kit.
I’m currently planning a three-week trip through Japan this autumn, and I really want to optimize my carry. I’ll be bringing my X-T5, the XF 16-80mm f/4 as my main walk-around lens, and the 35mm f/1.4 for those low-light street shots. I’ve been looking at the Peak Design 6L Sling and the Wandrd Roam, but I’m worried about whether they’ll comfortably fit the body plus an extra lens and some batteries without feeling cramped during 10-mile walking days.
On the tripod side, it’s even more confusing. I need something that is light enough to strap to a small pack or even fit inside a carry-on, but it has to be sturdy enough for long-exposure shots of the Kyoto cityscapes at night. I’ve looked at the Peak Design Travel Tripod (the carbon fiber one is tempting but pricey!) and some of the smaller Ulanzi or Benro options, but I’m worried about stability in the wind given how light the Fuji bodies are.
I’m trying to keep the budget for both the bag and the tripod around $500-$600 total. Does anyone here have a 'holy grail' combo they use for their X-Series gear when traveling? I’d love to hear what bags you find most comfortable for all-day use and which tripods actually strike that perfect balance between weight and rock-solid stability. What are your top recommendations for a dedicated Fuji travel setup?
yo, I feel u on the bulky dslr struggle. tbh, for Japan, I'd grab the Ulanzi & COMAN Zero Y Lightweight Travel Tripod. it's like $330 and way lighter than aluminum but still *super* stable for long exposures. pairing that with the Peak Design Everyday Sling 6L (around $120) keeps you under your $600 budget. might wanna be careful with slings for 10-mile days tho, they can hurt ur shoulder... gl!
sooo i’ve basically lived this exact scenario with my Fuji gear! Ngl, Japan involves a ton of walking and those 10-mile days are no joke, so comfort is highkey everything... i think maybe you should go for a slightly bigger bag than you originally planned? Here is what I recommend for that Fuji kit:
* **The Bag:** Definitely look at the Wandrd Rogue 9L Sling. Since you're doing 3 weeks in Japan, you're gonna want room for a water bottle or a packable jacket alongside your Fujifilm X-T5 and lenses. The 6L mentioned before is great, but it gets cramped FAST when you add a chunky lens like the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR.
* **The Tripod:** I’m super happy with the Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head. It’s tiny enough to fit inside a carry-on but feels surprisingly sturdy for a carbon fiber setup that usually stays under $200. Basically, my best tip for stability is to use the center hook! Since the Fuji bodies are pretty light, they dont always weigh the tripod down enough to resist wind on their own. I always hang my camera bag from the hook to add mass for long exposures in places like Kyoto. Honestly, it makes the whole thing feel rock-solid even in a breeze. Plus, this whole combo keeps you well under that $600 budget... probably closer to $400, which is a win. Hope you have an awesome trip! Japan in autumn is seriously the best... gl!! 👍
• Basically what I was gonna say! Totally agree with the bigger bag advice; in my experience, extra padding literally saved my Fuji when I tripped in Kyoto last year. Safety first!
