I’ve been shooting with an X-T4 lately, but native glass is getting pretty expensive. I’m really curious about brands like Sigma or Viltrox for street photography. Do their newer lenses keep up with Fuji's autofocus performance? What are your favorite third-party lenses that offer the best bang for your buck right now?
This^ Also wanted to add that if your looking for the absolute best bang for your buck, you really gotta check out the older Sigma trio. I've been using the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X-mount on my Fujifilm X-T4 for a while now and honestly... it's like 90% of the Fuji version for less than half the price. Usually goes for around $330 new, but you can find 'em used for way less. I totally agree that Viltrox is killing it lately, but just a heads up – make sure to update your firmware right away. I had some weird focus hunting issues on my Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF (which is a killer $300 lens btw) until I did the update. It’s kinda scary doing it yourself if you aren't techy, so maybe ask a pro or check a YouTube guide first to be safe?? If you want the absolute cheapest AF street lens, the TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8 for Fuji X-mount is like $150. It’s tiny! But be careful, the vignetting is pretty heavy compared to native glass. idk, it gives it a "look" I guess? lol. Not 100% sure it's for everyone though, so maybe check some samples first... TL;DR: Sigma is the safest bet for AF reliability (around $330), but TTArtisan is the budget king ($150) if you can live with some quirks. Anyway, just my two cents. gl with the street shooting!! ✌️
So I've had a moment to think about this more and, honestly, I'd actually suggest a different approach. > Do their newer lenses keep up with Fuji's autofocus performance? Respectfully, I'd consider another option if reliability is your main concern. Don't get me wrong, those Viltrox AF 27mm f/1.2 Pro XF primes are incredibly sharp, but after 10 years of shooting, I've learned that 'cheap' can lowkey cost you if the lens fails during a trip. I actually had a third-party lens lock up my X-T4 once cuz of a firmware bug—not fun. If you want the best bang for your buck while staying safe, compare these two:
1. Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Fujifilm X-mount: This is the safer pick over the Sigma. It’s got legit weather sealing and the Vibration Compensation is SO helpful for street photography.
2. Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X-mount: It's tiny, sure, but it feels way more fragile and lacks that rugged sealing. Basically, if you're shooting outdoors, I mean, you gotta think about the elements. I guess it just depends on how much you trust ur gear! peace
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, Viltrox has been killing it. I’ve tried many over the years, but the Viltrox AF 27mm f/1.2 Pro XF is insane for the price—I mean, its super sharp and AF is snappy on my X-T4. If you want a zoom tho, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X-mount is way lighter than native glass. Both are total steals i guess! gl
> I’m really curious about brands like Sigma or Viltrox for street photography. Do their newer lenses keep up with Fuji's autofocus performance? In my experience, basically all the new third-party glass is AMAZING lately!! So, historically, Fuji kept their autofocus secrets locked away, which made non-native lenses kinda risky or slow. But since they shared the mount specs, brands like Sigma and Viltrox have really stepped up. Honestly, the AF on my Sigma prime is basically just as fast as my Fuji lenses for street photography. I was a bit cautious at first cuz I didnt want it to glitch out during a shoot—I mean, you always gotta be careful with compatibility—but its been rock solid. Just a heads up though, I'd suggest checking if they have weather sealing before your taking them out in a storm. Some of these cheaper ones might not be as "tough" as the native ones. But for the money? Highkey the best bang for your buck right now! Just make sure you update the firmware first. 👍
