Hey everyone! I’ve finally made the jump to Fujifilm and I’m absolutely loving the film simulations, but I’m having a hard time deciding on the perfect prime lens for street photography. I’m currently shooting with an X-T5 and really want to stick to a single-lens setup to keep things lightweight and discrete while I’m out exploring the city.
I’m currently torn between the 23mm f/2 and the 35mm f/2 (the 'Fujicrons'). The 23mm seems like the classic choice for capturing the environment, but I’ve always been partial to the tighter, more intimate look of a 50mm equivalent. I’ve also considered the 27mm f/2.8 pancake lens because it makes the setup so pocketable, but I’m worried I might miss that extra stop of light once the sun goes down or if I'm shooting in a dimly lit alley.
I’ve spent hours watching YouTube reviews, but I’d love to hear from people who actually use these day-to-day. Is the fast autofocus and weather sealing of the f/2 series worth it, or should I look into the older f/1.4 versions for that extra bokeh and character? Between the 18mm, 23mm, and 35mm focal lengths, which one do you find yourself reaching for most when you're hitting the streets for a long day of shooting?
Sooo, when I first picked up my X-T5, I was basically in the exact same boat. I spent way too many hours pixel peeping YouTube reviews instead of actually hitting the pavement lol. In my experience, while the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR is technically the 'correct' street focal length, I ended up falling in love with the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR. Honestly, the autofocus is lightning fast and that weather sealing is a lifesaver when it starts drizzling mid-shoot. I've tried many lenses, including the older Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R, but the f/2 series is just more reliable for quick snaps on a modern body. If you're worried about low light with the Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR, remember your X-T5 has IBIS!! It seriously makes a huge difference. I say go for the 35mm f/2 – it forces you to look for those intimate moments you mentioned. Lesson learned: pick the focal length you love, cuz the tech will handle the rest! gl with the new setup!
> Between the 18mm, 23mm, and 35mm focal lengths, which one do you find yourself reaching for most when you're hitting the streets for a long day of shooting? Sooo, i've spent way too much time looking at MTF charts and tbh, for the X-T5's high-res sensor, you really want the newer glass. I personally use the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR Lens and it's basically glued to my camera. The stepping motors are dead silent and fast - perfect for candid shots where you dont want people noticing you. If you really care about that low light stuff tho, the newer Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR Lens is a technical powerhouse, but it's definitely chunkier. The Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR Pancake Lens is cool for pocketability, but that f/2.8 aperture is a buzzkill in dark alleys iirc. I'm super happy with the 23mm f/2... it works well and I have zero complaints about the sharpness on that 40MP sensor. Honestly, it's the most versatile choice. gl with the choice! 👍
> Between the 18mm, 23mm, and 35mm focal lengths, which one do you find yourself reaching for most when you're hitting the streets for a long day of shooting? I went through this exact same debate when I first started out! I actually started with the tiny flat lens but eventually found myself reaching for the widest option of those three way more often. What I learned was that the extra field of view really forced me to get closer to the action, which was super scary at first but it made my photos feel so much more alive! I even ended up DIY-ing a custom braided paracord strap for my setup so I could keep it glued to my hand all day long. It was such an amazing experiment and totally changed how I look at street photography! Just dive in and see what sticks to your soul! Youre gonna have a blast with that camera no matter what you pick!
This^ Also wanted to add that if youre being budget-conscious, the f/2 series is basically the way to go. - Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR: Best all-rounder for street, super reliable AF.
- Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR: More intimate look, way cheaper than the 1.4. I usually reach for the 23mm cuz its safer in the rain with the WR sealing, tho the 35mm is better value. Careful with older lenses lacking weather sealing! gl!
Jumping in here as someone whos been shooting Fuji since the X-Pro1 days. Youve got some solid advice so far, but before I give a final recommendation, I gotta ask... what is your actual hard budget for this? Also, are you strictly looking at Fuji-branded glass or are you open to third-party stuff? If you want that f/1.4 light gathering and bokeh without the sticker shock of the newer Fuji LM lenses, third-party brands are killing it right now. For example, the Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 XF is significantly cheaper than the Fuji f/1.4 version and holds up surprisingly well. Or, if you want something that fits right between the 23 and 35, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X is basically the value king for street photography if you dont mind missing the aperture ring. Let me know your thoughts on going third-party, because you can honestly save enough for a second lens if you shop around or hit the used market.
