Ive been shooting Fuji for years mostly landscapes with the 16-55 but I just started doing street photography in Chicago and man that zoom is way too heavy. People keep looking at me weird.

I was looking at the 23mm f2 for the FOV since everyone says thats the classic length but it feels like I have to get way too close to subjects. Then I looked at the 35mm f2 but then I lose the scene feel. My logic was the 23mm would be more versatile but now Im just stuck and annoyed because I have a trip to NYC in ten days and need to buy something. Budget is $500. Should I go for the f2 WR lenses or is the older f1.4 glass better for the character?

Like someone mentioned, WR is safer. Unfortunately, older glass is not as good as expected for fast street autofocus.

Hey there. Honestly, coming from that big zoom, you gotta be careful jumping into primes. Chicago streets can be hectic, so make sure you are comfortable before your NYC trip. Personally, I would suggest sticking to the WR lenses because they are reliable and you wont have to worry about weather issues if you get caught in the rain. Here is what I would look at:

  • Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR
  • It is small and discreet, so people wont notice you as much.
  • Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR
  • A bit tighter, but super sharp and very fast. I would suggest checking used prices for these. Buying older f/1.4 lenses might be risky if you dont know the history of the lens. Just take it slow.
