Best external monitors and cages for L-mount video shooting setups?

Hey everyone! I’ve recently transitioned my video workflow over to the L-mount system (loving the S5IIX so far!), but I’m struggling a bit with the physical rigging side of things. Shooting handheld or on a gimbal has been a challenge because the built-in screen just isn't cutting it for critical focus, especially when I'm shooting outdoors in mid-day sun.

I’m currently looking for a solid 5-inch or 7-inch monitor that plays nice with the L-mount ecosystem. I’ve been debating between the Atomos Ninja for that sweet ProRes RAW recording or the Blackmagic Video Assist, but I’m curious if one feels more "at home" on these bodies.

On the cage side, I’m looking for something that offers great cable management. I’m really worried about snapping the micro-HDMI port during a shoot. I've looked at the usual SmallRig and Tilta options, but I want to make sure whatever I get doesn't block the battery door or the side dials. For those of you running an L-mount setup for professional video, what specific cage and monitor combo are you using, and how do you find the weight distribution when using heavier Sigma Art glass?

I'd suggest the SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II / S5 IIX cuz their cable clamp is *clutch* for that micro-HDMI. - Atomos Ninja 5.2" 4K HDMI Recording Monitor: Best for RAW, but basically feels kinda plasticky. - Blackmagic Video Assist 5" 12G HDR: Rugged and more "pro" feeling. Honestly, big Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for L-Mount glass is always front-heavy... get a top handle to help balance things out! 👍

Hmm, I've had a different experience when it comes to the monitor choice. Not to disagree with the first reply, but unless you actually NEED external recording for ProRes RAW, those monitors add a ton of weight and heat that might stress the body. If you're mainly struggling with focus in the sun, I'd suggest a different approach with the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5" 2200nit High Brightness Touchscreen Monitor. It's literally 2200 nits, which is way brighter than the Ninja, and it has wireless camera control for the S5IIX. This is highkey a lifesaver because you can change settings without touching the camera body, which keeps everything more stable. For the cage, I'm actually a bit more cautious about the SmallRig one. I personally prefer the Tilta Full Camera Cage for Panasonic S5 II/S5 IIX - Black because their cable clamp feels more heavy-duty. When you're using heavy glass like the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for L-Mount, that extra rigidity in the Tilta frame really helps the weight distribution feel less sketchy. Just feels safer for the mount, you know? Plus, it doesn't block the dials at all. Anyway, hope that helps!

ive been rigging for years and honestly safety is #1. if youre worried about that micro-HDMI, check out Kondor Blue Panasonic S5II / S5IIX Cage. their clamps are rock solid. for the sun, the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5" 2200nit High Brightness Monitor is a total lifesaver for critical focus. Pro tip: check out the Kondor Blue site for setup guides on balancing heavy Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for L-Mount glass. gl!
