Hey everyone! I’ve been heavily invested in the Panasonic L-mount system for about a year now, primarily using the Lumix S5II for a mix of wedding photography and long-form event video projects. While I absolutely love the ergonomics of the body itself, I’m starting to hit a bit of a wall when it comes to balance and power endurance during those 10-hour shoot days.
Lately, I’ve been using the Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f/2.8 quite a bit, and honestly, the setup feels a little front-heavy without some extra mass on the body. My hands start to fatigue after a few hours of shooting, especially when I’m tracking subjects in vertical orientation for portraits. I’ve also had a couple of nerve-wracking moments where I had to swap batteries right in the middle of a ceremony, which is a stress level I’d like to avoid in the future.
I’m finally looking to pull the trigger on a battery grip to solve these issues, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the choices. Obviously, there’s the official Panasonic DMW-BG1, which I assume offers the best weather sealing and build quality, but it’s definitely a significant investment. On the other hand, I’ve seen several third-party options from brands like Neewer or DSTE that are much friendlier on the wallet, but I’m worried about whether the shutter button and joystick will feel "mushy" or if they’ll even communicate properly with the camera software.
One specific thing I'm curious about: for those of you who use these grips, does the camera prioritize the grip battery first? And does it allow for seamless USB-C charging of both batteries while the grip is attached? I really need something that feels like a natural extension of the camera rather than a clunky add-on.
So, for the L-mount shooters here (S5II, S1, or S1H users), what are your must-have battery grips? Is it truly worth spending the extra cash on the OEM Panasonic versions for the reliability, or is there a specific third-party model that you’ve found to be just as robust?
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, i tried the Neewer Battery Grip for Lumix S5II to save cash, but it was realy disappointing. The joystick felt so mushy... highkey annoying. Basically, only the Panasonic DMW-BG1 Battery Grip lets the camera properly prioritize the grip battery first and actually charges both via USB-C without weird errors. Third-party ones mess up the telemetry, so u wont know when it switches. Its pricey but definately worth it tho!
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, when ur shooting 10-hour days, that handshake between the body and grip is everything. Basically, the way these modern Lumix bodies work is by constantly monitoring voltage and thermals across those pins. If you go with a super cheap knockoff, you risk "communication errors" where the camera just shuts down mid-burst cuz it thinks there's a short. Not what u want during a wedding ceremony lol. I totally get the budget struggle tho. If you wanna save cash without risking your S5II's internal board, I would suggest looking for a used Panasonic DMW-BGS5 Battery Grip. Even tho it was technically designed for the original S5, it fits the S5II perfectly and carries the same legit weather sealing. I've seen 'em on used sites for like $130-$160 lately, which is a huge savings over the $350 Panasonic DMW-BG1 Battery Grip. Also, be careful with the USB-C charging on third-party stuff. It's lowkey a risk if the circuitry isnt built for high-wattage PD (Power Delivery) specs. If you're really strapped, maybe just get the SmallRig L-Bracket for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II for ergonomics and a Wasabi Power DMW-BLK22 2-Pack of Batteries for extra juice. It wont give u the vertical shutter button, but it balances that heavy Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm f/2.8 O.I.S. Lens way better for way less money. Safety first, especially for pro gigs!! gl
So, basically, the way these Lumix bodies handle power is through a handshake between the body and the grip's circuitry. If u go third-party, u risk the camera not seeing the second battery's telemetry correctly or losing that weather sealing. Why it matters? For a 10-hour wedding day, u NEED that seamless transition without the software glitching out. Honestly, I've tried the cheap brands, but the joysticks are always janky and feel like they're gonna snap off when you're swinging a heavy lens like the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S.. Seriously, just get the Panasonic DMW-BG1 Battery Grip. It lets u prioritize the grip battery first in the menu settings, so ur internal one stays fresh as a backup. Plus, it supports full USB-C PD charging for both batteries at once!! It’s literally a tank and feels like part of the body. gl!
