ive been looking at new tripods for weeks now and my head is spinning. trying to find something that can actually handle my lumix s1r with the 24-70mm s pro lens which weighs a ton compared to my old fuji setup. i need it for a trip to the highlands in scotland in about three weeks so im on a bit of a deadline here and really dont want my gear face-planting in the mud.
im currently torn between the peak design carbon fiber travel tripod and the gitzo traveler series 1. i love how small the peak design one gets but ive heard the center column can be a bit shaky when its fully loaded with heavy full frame glass like the l-mount stuff. on the other hand the gitzo is a classic but it costs a lot more and maybe isnt as innovative with the packing space. i also looked at the benro tortoise series because it doesnt have a center column at all which seems more stable for long exposures in the wind.
my budget is strictly under 650 dollars and i need it to fit inside a carry-on bag easily since i hate checking gear. i mostly do landscape stuff and some long exposures of waterfalls so stability is king.
does anyone here use the s1 or s1r on these smaller travel legs? is the peak design stable enough for that heavy l-mount glass or should i just bite the bullet on the gitzo...
ive been super satisfied with the Benro Tortoise 34C Columnless Carbon Fiber Tripod lately. honestly, if stability is your priority for scotlands wind, just skip the center column entirely... it fits my shimoda perfectly and feels way more solid than the peak design for long exposures. handles the s1r weight with zero sag, so it works well for me.
> is the peak design stable enough for that heavy l-mount glass I actually tried that exact setup with the S1R and it was honestly a letdown. I bought the Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber thinking it would be the ultimate solution, but unfortunately, it felt way too flimsy for my taste once the lens was fully extended. I just couldnt trust it. Safety is everything when youre spending that much on a camera body and i didnt want to risk a fall. I ended up returning it and found the Sirui AM-284 Carbon Fiber Tripod with K-20X Ball Head instead. It is significantly cheaper than the Gitzo and even the Peak Design, but it felt much more rigid in my testing. It is not as cool looking, but my gear didnt wobble. If youre on a budget and want to save some cash for your scotland trip, looking at the Vanguard VEO 3T+ 264CB Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod might be a safer bet for stability too. Honestly, the expensive brands were not as good as expected for heavy glass.
honestly the s1r is such a tank so you definitely need legs that wont buckle under that weight. if you want to save a ton of money while getting high-end stability i really recommend checking out the Leofoto LS-324C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with LH-40 Ball Head. its an absolute powerhouse for the price and leaves plenty of cash left over for your scotland trip! heres why it rocks for a heavy l-mount setup:
I love the Highlands! Back in the day, I think I heard hanging a pack from the hook was a fantastic cheap way to boost stability... not sure if itll hold that S1R tho!
