Honestly panicking a bit because I just traded in my old Sony gear for the S5II and I have a cousins wedding I'm shooting in like ten days and I realized I only have the kit zoom right now. Its a total disaster lol. I need at least one or two solid primes that wont break the bank because I spent most of my cash on the body itself and my bank account is looking pretty sad.
Ive been looking at that Panasonic 50mm f1.8 since everyone says the autofocus is native and fast which I need for the new phase detect, but then I see the Sigma 45mm f2.8 contemporary is super cheap right now. People online keep arguing though. Some say the Sigma looks more organic or whatever that means, but then others say the f2.8 is just way too slow for a dark reception hall and the bokeh is kinda messy.
I cant decide if I should just stick with the Panny 1.8 series or if those Sigma i-series lenses are actually worth the money even though they are slower. My budget is strictly under $450 for the first lens. I need to order like tonight to get it in time for my prep shoot on Tuesday. Is the 50mm 1.8 the safest bet for the S5II or am I gonna regret the build quality? Any other hidden gems in the L-mount world I missed?
> Is the 50mm 1.8 the safest bet for the S5II or am I gonna regret the build quality? Build quality is the last thing you should worry about right now tbh. Those Lumix primes are plastic but they are tough and, more importantly, weather sealed. If it pours during the ceremony, youll be glad you didnt get something "premium" that lacks a gasket. My big warning is that a 50mm alone is super risky for a wedding. Youll be way too close to people and end up in the videographers way the whole time. I would suggest hunting for a used Panasonic LUMIX S 85mm f1.8. It usually goes for around $450-500 new but you can find deals if you look hard tonight. Having that 85mm for the vows is a lifesaver. You can stand at the back of the aisle and still get the emotion without being an eyesore for the guests. Stay away from that Sigma 45mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary for this specific gig. Its a cool lens for street photography or travel, but f2.8 in a dim ballroom is a nightmare scenario. Your S5II has great high ISO but dont push your luck. If you really need wide on a budget, look at the Panasonic LUMIX S 35mm f1.8 instead. It stays in the same family as the 50mm, so the colors will match perfectly in your edit which saves you a ton of time later. Just make sure to update the firmware on whatever you buy so the PDAF works right. Good luck, weddings are stressful enough without gear drama...
> Is the 50mm 1.8 the safest bet for the S5II Depends on your style tho! Are you doing mostly tight portraits or wider shots? Technically, the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 is a beast because the linear motors are tuned for that PDAF system. Its amazing for tracking! Plus focus breathing is basically non-existent. At $350 its a steal. Seriously, skip the f2.8 Sigma... youll definitely need the extra stop for a dark reception!
Honestly, I've been in your shoes before. One time I swapped my whole kit right before a major gig and totally panicked about glass. In my experience, the native f1.8 glass is the way to go for that body. Over the years I've tried many third-party options, and while the build on some is nicer, the way the native primes talk to that phase detect system is just seamless. That lesson came the hard way at a dark reception where f2.8 just wasnt enough when people started dancing. A slower lens might feel more premium, but the autofocus hunted too much in low light... it was a nightmare. Stick with the faster native glass. It feels a bit light in the hand, but the reliability is worth it. You wont regret having that extra light when the sun goes down. Just get the faster option tonight so you can actually sleep and get some practice in.
