What are the must-have accessories for a Lumix S5II setup that I actually need to buy right now? I finally ditched my old Canon gear after nearly a decade because I couldnt pass up that new phase detect AF and the open gate recording is gonna save me so much time with my TikTok and IG clients. I’m based in Seattle and mostly do rainy outdoor lifestyle shoots so weather sealing is a big deal for me. I’ve got about 800 bucks left in my budget for the month and I need to be ready for a big wedding shoot in ten days so I'm feeling a bit of a time crunch.
I am trying to figure out if I need to go all out on V90 cards or if I can get away with V60 for 4k 10-bit stuff since the bitrates on the S5II aren't as crazy high as the GH6. Also does this thing eat batteries? My old R6 was okay but I’m worried about the fan and the IBIS draining it while I’m out in the woods. Thinking about a SmallRig cage too but maybe that’s overkill if I’m trying to stay light? Is there a specific top handle that works best with the XLR adapter because I’m definitely picking that up for better audio. Just want to make sure I’m not missing anything obvious before I hit the checkout button...
Welcome to the Lumix fam! Honestly you are gonna love this switch so much, the phase detect is absolutely amazing and that open gate feature is basically magic for your social media clients. I do a ton of high-pressure event work in similar conditions and ngl you can save some serious cash on those cards by not overspending on specs you dont need.
Like someone mentioned, getting reliable cards is huge. I learned at a rainy mountain shoot that cheap cards fail when things get damp.
Unfortunately, cheap V60 cards arent reliable for weddings. I had issues with generic brands. Use these:
Dude, I am so hyped for you! Making the jump to the S5II is gonna be such a massive upgrade for your workflow, especially for those quick social edits! Quick question before I dive into the deep end though... are you planning on mounting a heavy shotgun mic to that XLR unit or just keeping it light with a wireless receiver? It really changes how you gotta think about the balance of the whole rig when you are moving fast. Honestly, your situation reminds me so much of my buddy Dave back in 2019:
