What is the absolute best everyday zoom lens for L-mount cameras right now?
I just picked up a Panasonic Lumix S5II for a family trip to Japan next month and really want to find a solid one-lens solution so I dont have to swap glass constantly while walking around Tokyo. My budget is around $1100 max, which definitely rules out those fancy Leica options.
Ive done a bunch of research already but Im stuck. The Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art gets glowing reviews everywhere, but it just looks so heavy and bulky to carry around all day. On the flip side, people say the Panasonic 20-60mm kit lens is surprisingly sharp and super lightweight, but that variable aperture makes me nervous for indoor temples and night street shooting. I also looked at the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 Contemporary which seems like a nice compromise, but some forum posts mentioned the autofocus can be a bit twitchy on Panasonic bodies.
Im really torn between going for the constant f2.8 speed versus saving weight for travel. What are you guys actually using as your daily driver on these bodies...

Honestly, dont sleep on f4 options. I use the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f4 Macro OIS as my main travel lens on the S5II and it works wonders. Sure, f4 sounds slow compared to f2.8, but the dual native ISO on the S5II is incredibly clean. You can easily bump the ISO to 4000 or 6400 inside temples without worrying. Plus, the Dual IS (lens stabilization working with body IBIS) lets you shoot handheld at super slow shutter speeds at night. It is a bit heavier than the kit lens but that extra reach to 105mm is so useful for travel. You can easily grab one used for around $700-$800, well under your budget.
I use the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary L-Mount on my S5II and it is the perfect middle ground for travel. Couple of things you might want to consider:
