What is the best all-around zoom lens for Panasonic S5II?

so i finally pulled the trigger on the s5ii last week and i love the autofocus so much compared to the old s5 but now im in a total panic. my sisters wedding is in literally ten days and i realized my prime lens setup just isnt gonna cut it for a fast moving event like that. i need one lens that can basically live on the camera all day so i dont miss anything while fumbling in my bag. i’ve narrowed it down to like two main choices but i keep going back and forth and i need to order something by tomorrow to make sure it gets here to seattle in time.

here is what im looking at:

  • lumix 24-105mm f4 macro
  • sigma 24-70mm f2.8 art
  • panasonic 28-200mm f4-7.1

option one is the lumix 24-105mm f4 macro. the reach seems amazing and having that extra bit on the long end would be huge for the ceremony. plus i heard the dual is with this lens is basically magic for handheld video which i’ll be doing a lot of. but then i worry about the f4 aperture because the reception is in this old dimly lit barn and im scared the noise is gonna be terrible even with the s5ii dual native iso.

then theres the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 art. everyone says the image quality is incredible and that extra stop of light would be a lifesaver in the dark. but its heavier and i lose that extra 35mm of reach and i dont think the stabilization is as good as the native panasonic glass. i found a used one for $950 which fits my $1100 budget perfectly but i just dont know if i should prioritize the 2.8 aperture or the 105mm reach and better stabilization. i also looked at the new 28-200mm but that feels like too much of a compromise on aperture for a wedding and i dont want things looking soft.

budget is pretty strict around $1100 because the camera body already killed my savings and i need to buy extra v90 cards too. what do you guys think is the better move for a one-lens-does-it-all situation? is the f4 gonna screw me over in low light or does the s5ii handle it well enough that i should just go for the extra reach and better is?

tbh i would grab the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art for a wedding. the stabilization on the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f4 Macro O.I.S. is magic but f4 in a dark barn is asking for trouble. the s5ii is good at high iso but f2.8 is a lifesaver.

  • sigma: better low light and bokeh
  • lumix: better reach and dual is id take the aperture over reach any day.

Ran into a similar panic last year with a cousins ceremony in a literally pitch black reception hall. Ended up going with the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary instead of the big Art lens. Honestly i was so satisfied with how light it felt after eight hours of shooting. The s5ii body is already a bit chunky so saving that weight was a lifesaver for my wrists, and i didnt feel like i was sacrificing much image quality at all. The f2.8 is basically non negotiable for those dark corners. This lens is the sweet spot because you save enough cash to grab those SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-II V90 cards you mentioned. Quick tip tho... just use the aps-c crop mode if you really need that extra reach for the kiss. It turns that 70mm into roughly a 105mm and the 4k video still looks crisp. It works well and i havent had any complaints about sharpness.

Like someone mentioned, that f4 is a gamble. Unfortunately, I had major focus issues with the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. during a ceremony once. The hunting was super stressful and basically ruined my confidence for the night. It just isnt a safe bet when the lights go down.

^ This. Also, unfortunately i had similar issues with the autofocus on that Panasonic LUMIX S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. when the lights went down... it just isnt as good as expected for professional work in the dark. It hunts way too much for a wedding scenario where you only get one shot at the kiss. I definitely agree that f2.8 is the bare minimum for a barn reception. If you're stressed about the budget and those expensive V90 cards, you could probably save some cash by grabbing these instead of the overpriced name brands:

  • Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB SDXC UHS-II (still V90 but way cheaper)
  • Sabrent Rocket V90 128GB SD Card That should leave you enough room to grab a used Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. Just a heads up tho, some of the older copies of that Sigma had issues with dust getting behind the front element, so try to check the serial number if you can. Even with that flaw, the image quality and light gathering are gonna save your life in that barn. The S5II is amazing but it cant work miracles with an f4 lens in total darkness.
