I just got a Sigma fp and I'm super confused about how to use my old Canon lenses on it. Someone told me I need an "adapter" but there are so many options online and I'm worried I'll buy the wrong thing. I really just want to take pictures of my kids and our new puppy so nothing too fancy needed. I have a few lenses that say EF on them so I think those are the ones?
Heres what Im looking for:
Is the Sigma one the only good choice? I saw some cheaper ones on Amazon but I'm scared they might ruin the camera...
Building on the earlier suggestion, I have been really satisfied with the Viltrox EF-L Mount Adapter for a few months now. It fits my budget and the autofocus works well enough for my dogs. I also looked at the Commlite CM-EF-L Electronic Lens Mount Adapter, which is even cheaper, but the Viltrox felt sturdier in my hands. No complaints so far, it just works without any scary wobbling.
Saw this earlier and meant to jump in because I went through this exact same headache with my fp. Started with a super cheap no-name thing from eBay and honestly, it was a nightmare. The focus hunt was so bad my kids would literally walk out of the frame before the shutter even fired. It was basically a paperweight. Eventually tried the Commlite CM-EF-L Electronic Lens Mount Adapter as a middle-ground option and its been surprisingly decent for the price. Be careful though, because the autofocus on these adapters isnt always puppy-fast. Even with something like the Fotodiox Pro Fusion Adapter EF to L-Mount, you might find it struggles a bit in low light. Make sure to update the firmware on whatever you buy right away. It saved me from a lot of random freezing issues I had at the start. Just dont expect miracles for fast-moving pets, yknow? It takes some patience.
I am seriously so stoked for you because that camera is an amazing little machine! Honestly, the first time I tried to save cash on adapters it turned into a total nightmare. This sketchy metal ring I bought actually started shedding tiny metal flakes right into my sensor chamber... it was terrifying! Thinking I ruined my brand new gear just to save a few bucks made me feel sick. Here is what I have figured out after years of tinkering:
Ngl ZinniaZephyr is 100% right about those cheap rings... metal shavings inside a camera body are enough to give anyone a heart attack. I've been super happy with my setup lately because I stopped trying to save every penny and prioritized a snug fit instead. Heres what I have found from trying a few others out:
@Reply #5 - good point! Fit is definitely the biggest factor when you're trying to keep things from rattling around. Before I jump in with my thoughts, which specific EF lenses are you actually trying to use? Some of those older ones act pretty weird on newer mirrorless bodies compared to the newer stuff. This whole conversation honestly reminds me of my buddy Mike who thought he could DIY his own adapter using some spare parts from a junked Rebel and a 3D printer he just got.
