I've been shooting with an M10 and an M6 for a decade now and always just used the stock straps. Never cared about the looks but I just noticed the metal split rings are totally gouging the camera lugs and even hitting the top plate despite the protectors. Its making me really anxious because I'm worried about the resale value later on. I have a trip to Tokyo in three weeks and need a leather strap that actually has proper built-in protection so I dont keep scratching the brass. Looking to spend around $150. What are the best leather neck straps for Leica M cameras that wont destroy the body?

Saw this today. The Oberwerth Rhine Vegetable Tanned Leather Strap is a decent option for your budget. It uses premium cowhide with integrated protectors that fully isolate the split rings. Quick tip: always verify the leather ears are at least 1.5mm thick to prevent metal compression. Also, check the Leica Wiki for their lug compatibility charts because some thicker straps wont clear the M6 lugs properly.

Man, if you're worried about scratches and want to stay under that $150 mark, you absolutely have to check out Gordy's Camera Straps Horizontal Leather Neck Strap with Bumper. These things are legendary in the rangefinder community for a reason! They use heavy-duty Latigo leather that just gets better with age. Best part? You can add the leather bumpers for basically nothing extra and they are bulletproof against lug rub. I've used them on my M6 for years and the top plate still looks mint. Another fantastic option that wont break the bank is the Rock n Roll Straps Classic Leather Camera Strap. They look incredibly stylish on an M camera and the leather is thick enough to keep those metal rings far away from your precious brass. It is a total game changer for peace of mind while you're walking around Shibuya! If you want to save even more cash for film once you hit Japan, Cecilia Gallery Leather Camera Strap with Lug Protectors is a total sleeper hit. The leather is super supple right out of the box and the protection is top notch. Honestly, dont drop $200 on some boutique name when you can get the same protection for way less. You will have way more money left over for some Portra 400 at Yodobashi Camera! These straps use high-quality split rings that feel way more secure than the flimsy stock ones. Seriously, the Gordys is my go-to because it is so minimalist but effective. It wont bulky up your bag either.

Tbh I was terrified when I first got my M6 and saw the brass showing through. I tried a cheap leather strap once and the protective flap was so thin it just slid out of the way... total nightmare. Basically, I only trust designs that have:

  • thick integrated leather ears
  • zero exposed metal near the lugs
  • stiff leather that doesnt fold Staying cautious really paid off for me tho. No more scratches.
