Does anyone have a solid recommendation for a thumb grip and a half case for the Leica Q3 that actually works with the new tilt screen? I am leaving for a street photography workshop in Tokyo this coming Friday and I realized today during a test walk that the ergonomics are just not clicking for me like they did on my old Q2 and I am honestly panicking a little bit. I have been shooting Leica for over a decade so I know the drill with the expensive accessories but I really need something that balances the weight better because the Q3 feels a bit front-heavy when I am doing one-handed street shots.
My main issue is that my thumb keeps sliding around the back and I am accidentally hitting buttons since the layout changed slightly from the previous gen. I looked at the official Leica thumb support but it is super expensive and I have heard mixed things about whether it makes the power switch harder to toggle or if it gets in the way of the hot shoe too much. I need to be able to slide it off quickly if I want to use my SF40 flash for some night stuff near Shinjuku.
For the half case I am looking for something that is really high quality leather but it MUST have a cutout for the battery and SD card door. I cannot deal with unscrewing the whole case every time I need to swap a card because I tend to shoot a lot of high-res DNGs and I go through cards fast. Here is what I have looked at so far:
What are you guys using that doesnt add a ton of unnecessary weight? I am fine spending a few hundred bucks if the quality is there but I need it to actually improve the handling not just look pretty for the 'gram. Really hoping to find a combo that makes the camera feel like an extension of my hand again before I hop on this flight...
Just catching up on this. Quick question tho, are you using a neck strap or a wrist loop? It totally changes how the weight feels. I would suggest being cautious with the SmallRig Leica Q3 Thumb Grip 4214—it's light, but the edges can feel kinda sharp. For the case, maybe check the Kaza Deluxe Leica Q3 Leather Half Case but make sure the hinge is solid so it doesnt snap off mid-trip.
I have been in your shoes before a trip and honestly, dont rush into official Leica gear just for the name. I dropped a fortune on accessories for my M10 once and it felt like a total waste. For the grip, you might want to consider the Haoge THB-Q3B Thumb Grip for Leica Q3. I picked one up recently and its basically a clone of the official one for a fraction of the price. Be careful tho, some cheap ones can scratch the hot shoe if you arent gentle when sliding them off for your flash. For the case, make sure to check the TP Original Leather Half Case for Leica Q3. I use it because it has that bottom door for the battery. I would suggest staying away from custom artisan brands if you are in a rush. This one is solid leather, much cheaper, and gets the job done.

@Reply #2 - good point! I once spent way too much on a custom setup and ended up regretting it mid-trip. The extra bulk made reaching the buttons a total pain during fast street shots. Now I stick to thinner, more utilitarian options. Honestly, the most expensive leather often feels too thick, making the camera handle worse. Better to focus on that slim fit so it still feels like a Q and not a brick.
