What are the essential accessories for a new Leica M camera?

Hey everyone! I finally did it—I just took the plunge and picked up my first Leica M (the M11) after years of dreaming about it. I’m absolutely thrilled to start shooting, but I’m also a little terrified of scratching this beautiful machine or missing out on a better handling experience because I’m used to bulky mirrorless grips.

Since the rangefinder workflow is so different from what I’m used to, I’m trying to figure out which accessories are actually "essential" for daily use and which are just for show. I’ve been looking into getting a Match Technical Thumbs Up because I’ve heard it significantly helps with the one-handed grip, but I’m also torn on whether a half-case is worth the extra bulk for protection. Also, what’s the general consensus on UV filters for Leica glass? I usually skip them, but given the cost of these lenses, I’m feeling a bit protective.

I want to keep the setup fairly minimal to maintain that classic M portability, but I don't want to regret skipping something vital. For those of you who have been shooting M cameras for a while, what were the first 2 or 3 things you bought that actually improved your shooting experience or gave you peace of mind? I'd love to hear your recommendations on must-have straps, batteries, or even specific screen protectors that don't ruin the display quality!

So basically the consensus is grip and glass protection, but I've had issues with overpriced stuff... maybe the Haoge HG-M11 Aluminum Hand Grip ($60) is safer for a budget? Works well tho.

oh man, congrats on the M11! honestly, if youre worried about handling, get the Match Technical Thumbs Up EP-MX for Leica M11 immediately. it basically transforms the camera without adding bulk. also, I HIGHLY suggest a B+W 46mm MRC Nano 010 UV-Haze Filter to protect that glass... better safe than sorry, right? finally, grab the Leica Screen Protector for M11 for peace of mind. just be careful with those third-party cases! gl!

Curious about one thing: what's ur typical shooting style gonna be? Like, r u mostly doing fast street stuff where u need quick access, or more slow-paced travel? Also, r u planning on using heavier glass or just small primes? The ergonomics and center of gravity basically change depending on the lens weight and if u use a strap... so yeah, lemme know what ur kit looks like!

Ok so, just found this thread and congrats on the M11. Honestly, I’m gonna disagree slightly with the 'grip first' mentality. I've spent way too much time researching the market for these, and adding bulk to an M camera basically defeats the purpose of the rangefinder experience for me. Instead of bolting on metal right away, here’s what I’ve found actually works after looking at different brands: 1. **Strap over Grips:** Instead of a thumb grip, look at a high-quality silk or rope strap. The Artisan & Artist Silk Cord Strap is legendary for a reason—it lets the camera hang perfectly and you can wrap it around ur wrist for security. It feels way more natural than a thumb rest or a bulky handle.
2. **Hoods over Filters:** Tbh, I'm not a fan of putting extra glass in front of Leica optics. I'd rather use the standard Leica Lens Hood. It provides better physical protection from drops and actually improves image quality by blocking stray light, whereas even expensive filters can sometimes cause ghosting.
3. **Spare Power:** Since the M11 is basically a computer now, I’d prioritize a second Leica BP-SCL7 Battery over a case. Idk if it’s just me, but the peace of mind of having a fresh cell in ur bag is worth more than a leather half-case that just adds weight. Basically, try it 'naked' for a week before you decide you need to change the ergonomics.

I went through a phase where I overbought every official accessory because I was worried about resale value. Honestly, I found the Leica brand cases kind of annoying because you have to unscrew them to get to the battery. I eventually landed on a setup that feels more tool-like and less like a museum piece.

  • Oberwerth Half Case for Leica M11 solved my biggest gripe... it has a magnetic flap on the bottom so you can swap batteries in seconds without taking the case off.
  • Hoya 46mm Fusion Antistatic Next UV Filter is a solid alternative to the B+W ones, basically does the same job for a bit less cash and stays cleaner. Quick tip: skip the fancy screen protectors. The rear glass is toughened anyway, and they usually just add glare... just get a case with a rear flap instead.
