Going to Japan next month for three weeks and my OM-D E-M10 is basically glued to me. Im down to my last $100 for gear extras and cant decide what to prioritize for the trip.

Torn between these options:

  • Peak Design Leash (the stock strap is literal trash)
  • Extra Wasabi batteries (I heard OEM ones are better though?)
  • A small Tenba case to keep it safe in my backpack

I really need to save space in my carry-on so I dont want anything bulky but my neck gets sore after an hour of shooting with that stock strap. Which one of these is actually essential for travel?

Honestly, ive been using an OM-D setup for years and Japan is basically heaven for m43 shooters. Since you mentioned the neck pain, that stock strap has gotta go first. Im really satisfied with how the Peak Design Leash Camera Strap L-AS-3 handles the E-M10. Its thin enough to stay out of the way but those quick-connectors are super handy when you want to tuck the camera away quickly.

  • Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack and Charger for Olympus BLS-5
  • Grab these with the leftover cash. Honestly, they work well enough that i wouldnt worry about the OEM price tag for a trip like this.
  • Tenba Tools BYOB 7 Camera Insert Black/Grey
  • This is the way to go if you want to use your normal backpack instead of a bulky camera bag. Stick with the strap if youre only buying one thing tho. No point in having extra batteries if youre too sore to keep the camera out... hope you have a blast in Japan, its amazing for street photography!

^ This. Also, a LensPen NLP-1 Cleaning Tool is a decent option for your pocket. Japan gets misty and smudges on m43 lenses are super noticeable. Since you're shooting for three weeks, maybe grab a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I too. It works better than having to delete photos on the train cuz you ran out of space.
