Which M4/3 lenses are best for low-light street photography?

Hey everyone — I’m shooting street at night with a Micro Four Thirds body (Olympus/OM style) and I’m trying to figure out which M4/3 lenses actually work best for low-light street photography. Most of my shots are handheld in mixed lighting (street lamps, storefronts, passing cars), and I’m often bouncing between quick candids and wider scene-setting frames.

Right now I’m using a basic kit zoom and it’s… fine in daylight, but once the sun goes down I’m either pushing ISO way higher than I want or ending up with motion blur on people walking by. I’m debating whether a fast prime is the obvious move (like a 17mm or 25mm with a wide aperture), or if something with great stabilization or a brighter zoom makes more sense in the real world.

A few constraints: I’d like something that’s reasonably compact (not trying to draw attention), and my budget is around $500–$700 used if possible. I also can’t decide whether 17mm-ish or 25mm-ish is more practical for street at night.

So, which M4/3 lenses have you found genuinely best for low-light street shooting, and why?

For your situation, I’d go fast prime first. My night-street keepers jumped a ton with:
- Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8: small, quick AF, great “scene + subject” vibe
- Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f/1.8: better subject pop, but tighter (missed moments)
If budget allows used, Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH is kinda perfect. Be careful relying on OIS for people tho… it won’t stop walking blur. good luck!

Hmm, I’ve had a different experience… I bought fast primes first and still got annoyed at night cuz people move. What actually bumped my keeper rate was going *stabilized zoom* + accept a bit more ISO.

If you’re on Olympus/OM, I’d look hard at Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO used. f/2.8 isn’t “wow” on paper, but the flexibility (12mm for scene-setting, 25–40mm for candids) means fewer missed frames, and you can ride 1/15–1/30s for static stuff with IBIS. For prime-style compact, Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 20mm f/1.4 PRO is lowkey a sweet middle ground—wide enough for street, fast enough for lamps.

Lesson learned: aperture helps, but shutter speed + framing options matter more than I thought… good luck

Ok so I got burned by “fast prime fixes it” lol… for $500–$700 used I’d look at Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7 ASPH POWER O.I.S. (sharp, stabilized, great for candids) vs Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Micro Four Thirds (wide, bright, but bigger). 25mm-ish is safer for people, 17-ish for scenes, right?
