Which prime lens is best for street photography on M4/3?

I have been using the kit zoom lens on my Lumix GX9 for a few months now, and while it is versatile, I really want to move toward a more compact prime lens setup for street photography. I love the portability of the Micro Four Thirds system, but I find myself struggling with low-light shots and getting that nice subject separation when I am out in the city.

I have been looking at a few different options, specifically the Olympus 17mm f1.8 and the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 pancake. The 20mm seems perfect for keeping the camera pocketable, but I have read some mixed reviews about the autofocus speed on older bodies. On the other hand, the 25mm lenses seem great for detail, but I am worried they might be a bit too tight for narrow alleyways or busy sidewalks. I am also considering the Leica 15mm f1.7 if I can find a good deal on a used one.

My budget is around $400, and I am mostly looking for something that is quick to focus and discreet enough that I do not stand out too much. I am really curious to hear from those of you who have tried multiple focal lengths on this system. Should I prioritize the wider field of view or the faster aperture for general street use?

If you had to pick just one prime for a day of walking around the city, which one would you choose and why?

Seconding the recommendation above for sure! I've been thinking about your question and honestly, if you're rocking a Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9, you really gotta consider how the lens talks to the body. Since you're worried about AF speed, let's compare the big three:

  • Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. vs Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8: The 20mm is legendary for sharpness but its older AF motor is... well, it hunts a bit in low light cuz it uses an older gear-driven actuator. I tried it on my old GX85 and the hunting drove me nuts at night. The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 is way snappier and has that snap focus ring which is highkey amazing for zone focusing.
  • Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH.: This is lowkey the best choice if you can find one used for around $350. It's technically superior with better micro-contrast and that physical aperture ring (tho it only works on Panasonic bodies like yours!). Tbh, the 25mm lenses like the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH. are usually too tight for narrow spots, basically 50mm equivalent. For a day of walking, I'd choose the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH. every time. It gives you that slightly wider 30mm field of view which is perfect for environmental portraits without being too distorted. Just make sure to check the used market... you can usually snag one in ur $400 budget easy. i dont think you'll regret it. gl!
