Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my stabilization setup and need some advice on gimbals for the Nikon Z8. I've been shooting handheld mostly, but I'm getting into more video work and need that buttery smooth footage. My main use cases are:Wedding videography (ceremony and reception coverage)Some travel content creationOccasional commercial workI've been eyeing the DJI RS 3 Pro and the Zhiyun Crane 3S, but I'm open to other suggestions. My typical lens setup includes the 24-70 f/2.8 S and sometimes the 70-200 f/2.8 S, so payload capacity is definitely a consideration.Budget is flexible but ideally under $1,500. I'm willing to spend more if there's a significant quality jump.Has anyone here used the Z8 with any of these gimbals? How's the balance with the native Z lenses? Any compatibility issues I should know about? Also curious about:Battery life during long shooting daysHow well they handle quick movements and followsBuild quality and reliabilityThanks in advance for any insights!
I went with the DJI RS 4 Pro after a lot of research and haven't looked back. The new LiDAR focus system works beautifully with the Z8's autofocus, and the build quality feels rock solid. It's definitely on the pricier side but the performance justifies it. The automated axis locks are a game changer when you're moving between locations frequently.
Waiting for DJI RS5 and RS5 Pro, when will be released?
Maybe later this year to early next year. https://www.photographypanel.com/dji-forum/release-date-for-dji-rs-5-and-rs-5-pro/
Finally someone says it. Ive been thinking this for a while but wasnt sure.
To add to the point above, Ive spent way too many hours tweaking gimbals in the middle of a wedding reception while the couple was waiting. Its a nightmare. I eventually just switched over to the DJI ecosystem and havent had those issues since. Their stuff just works better with the heavier Z series bodies in my experience.
Honestly, I've been running the Nikon Z8 for about half a year now and I gotta say, if ur planning on using that 70-200 f/2.8 S often, you need to be really careful. Most gimbals claim they can handle the payload, but the physical length of that lens is the real killer for the motors during a long wedding day. Here is my take from an experienced owner's perspective: - **The 70-200 Balance:** Tbh, the Zhiyun Crane 3S is a total tank and handles the 70-200 better than almost anything else because of the larger clearance. However, it's heavy as hell. After a 10-hour wedding, ur back will hate you. - **Cable Reliability:** I've found the DJI RS 3 Pro has slightly better communication stability with Nikon's firmware. I rarely get those annoying "camera disconnected" errors when using the USB-C control. - **Motor Stress:** If you go with the DJI, definitely invest in some counterweights for the 70-200 setup. Without them, the tilt motor gets super hot after a couple of hours because it's working so hard to keep that front-heavy glass level lol.
- **Battery Realities:** Don't believe the marketing specs. With a heavy Z8 setup, expect about 6-7 hours of real-world use. I always keep a power bank in my bag to top off during lunch breaks. Basically, if you do more commercial work with heavy glass, get the Zhiyun. For weddings where you need to move fast, the DJI is the way to go.
