Best Nikon camera for wedding photography?

Looking for recommendations on the best current Nikon camera for wedding work. I've been shooting with older gear and it's time for an upgrade. Need something that excels in low light since ceremony venues can be pretty dim, plus good autofocus performance for those critical moments. Also important to have dual card slots for backup security. I'm considering both Z mount and F mount options, though leaning toward mirrorless for the EVF benefits. Budget is around $2000-4000 for the body. What cameras have been working well for wedding photographers? Any particular models that handle mixed lighting situations especially well? Would love to hear from anyone shooting weddings professionally with Nikon gear!

Love this camera, but a bit expensive for me.

Made the switch to Z6 III last year and haven't looked back. The EVF is a game-changer for nailing exposure in mixed lighting, and the in-body stabilization helps so much during those handheld ceremony shots. Silent shooting modes are perfect for quiet moments. Yeah, battery life isn't as good as DSLRs, but I just carry extras. The Z mount glass is incredible - that 50mm f/1.2 S creates magic.

Re: "Been shooting weddings for 8 years now and..."

  • I totally agree with the emphasis on reliability. Honestly, I had issues with the earlier mirrorless units like the Nikon Z7 II where the autofocus tracking just wasnt as good as expected during fast-paced receptions. It felt like a step back from the 3D tracking on the Nikon D850 which is still a beast for many of us. If you are moving to mirrorless, the Nikon Z8 is really the only logical choice in your budget range, but there are some caveats. While the low light performance is incredible, the battery life is quite disappointing compared to what we are used to with the older F-mount bodies. You will definitely want to add the Nikon MB-N12 Power Battery Pack to keep it powered for a full day. Also, the file sizes are massive, so dont forget to budget for high-speed media like the ProGrade Digital 256GB CFexpress Type B Gold. It handles mixed lighting better than anything else I have used tho, so it is probably worth the extra investment for the peace of mind.

Been shooting weddings for 8 years now and currently use the D850 as my main body with a D750 as backup. The D850's 45MP sensor gives me incredible detail for those big prints, and the dynamic range saves me when dealing with tricky church lighting. Battery life is solid too - crucial for those 12-hour wedding days. The Z9 is tempting but I'm not ready to fully commit to mirrorless yet. For lenses, 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 are my workhorses.
