Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my vlogging setup and considering the Nikon Z series. I mainly shoot travel vlogs and lifestyle content, so I need good autofocus, decent low-light performance, and ideally a flip screen for self-recording. Budget isn't a huge concern, but I want the best value. I've been eyeing the Z6 III and Z8, but I'm open to suggestions. What are your experiences with Nikon Z cameras for video content creation? Any lens recommendations would be appreciated too!
For vlogging on a budget, I'd definitely recommend the Nikon Z30 - it's actually Nikon's first dedicated vlogging camera. You get vlogging-friendly features like a fully articulated touchscreen, a large video recording button, and a stereo mic on the top plate that sounds surprisingly good for a built-in microphone. The camera weighs only 405g and there's no viewfinder, which helps keep the weight down. Video footage looks excellent, with uncropped 4K available at up to 30p.
The main downsides are the lack of a headphone jack, which compromises its usefulness somewhat for video and it can struggle with overheating during longer recording sessions in 4K. But for the price point, it's hard to beat as a starter vlogging camera!
If you’re mainly vlogging (talking to camera, walking around, some travel stuff), I’d look at it this way:
Best value for most people: Nikon Z30
If you want full-frame and better low light: Nikon Z6 III
If your main priority is lightweight and affordable vlogging, get the Z30 with something like the Z DX 12–28mm f/3.5–5.6 PZ VR – the power zoom is great for vlogging.
If you see yourself doing more serious video and photography long term, the Z6 III is the more future‑proof body.
@Reply #4 - good point! Jumping in here because I've spent the last year testing the thermal limits and sensor readout speeds of these bodies for my own travel channel. I actually switched from a Sony Alpha 7 IV to the Nikon ecosystem because the internal 10-bit N-Log workflow is just fantastic for my color grading process! Here is how I broke down the data during my testing:
