Hey everyone — I’m looking for tripod recommendations specifically for Nikon Z bodies (I’m on a Z8, but sometimes use a Z6 II) paired with heavier glass. Most of my tripod time is with the Z 100-400 + 1.4x, and occasionally a much heavier 180-600 (or rented 400/2.8), so stability is starting to matter more than “small and light.”
My current setup is a cheap aluminum tripod that was fine for smaller lenses, but with these longer lenses I’m seeing a bit of vibration when I touch the camera, and it takes a couple seconds to settle — especially outdoors with wind. I also do some low-angle shooting for wildlife, so I’d love something that can get close to the ground without being annoying to adjust.
A few constraints: I hike with my gear, so I don’t want a total boat anchor, but I’m okay carrying more weight if it actually solves the wobble. Budget is roughly $300–$600 for legs (more if it’s truly worth it). Also unsure if I should prioritize a gimbal head vs a ball head for this.
What tripod (and head) do you recommend for Nikon Z cameras with heavy/long lenses, and what specs should I pay attention to so I don’t end up upgrading again?

For your situation, I’d suggest 3-series carbon legs, honestly. I’ve used a Benro TMA38C Mach3 Carbon Fiber Tripod and it’s *way* less buzzy in wind than cheap aluminum. If you want more “set it and forget it” stiffness: Gitzo Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod GT3542L (pricey tho). Value pick: Leofoto LS-364C Carbon Fiber Tripod. Head-wise, for 180-600/400 2.8, a gimbal like Wimberley WH-200 II Gimbal Head is just easier than a ball head, you know?
+1 to the “stiff legs first” advice — totally. Been there with the touch-the-camera wobble… it’s mostly leg stiffness + no center column. A couple good-value options:
- Sirui ST-124 Carbon Fiber Tripod: lighter for hiking, but borderline with a rented 400/2.8 in wind.
- Sirui ST-2204 Carbon Fiber Tripod: thicker tubes, way calmer.
- Manfrotto 055 Carbon Fiber Tripod (MT055CXPRO4): rock solid, heavier.
Head: I’d do Sirui K-40X Ball Head + a lens foot (keep it balanced). Also: hang weight + use a remote, seriously helps!!!
For your situation, I’d go “stiff legs first, head second” honestly. Look at Leofoto LN-364C Carbon Fiber Tripod or Really Right Stuff TVC-33 Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod (used). Specs that matter: 3/4-series, no center column (or keep it down), 36mm+ top tubes, and a big 75mm bowl/leveling base for fast setup low to the ground. For heads, a solid ball like Really Right Stuff BH-55 LR Ballhead works great with a lens foot + Arca clamp. gl!
