I'm looking for recommendations on the best flash to use with my Nikon Z8. I primarily shoot wildlife and airshows, but I also want something versatile enough for fill lighting in other situations. I would appreciate any suggestions for flashes that have TTL capabilities and are compatible with the Z8.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Just upgraded to the Z8 for my event photography business and after extensive research, went with the SB-5000. At present, my suggestion for Z camera owners is that they pay closest attention to the SB-500 and SB-5000, as those are two most versatile units that are fully supported by the in-camera menu system on Z-mount cameras.
The radio control setup with WR-R11a/WR-T10 is fantastic - gives me Radio control from the camera so I can place the speedlight wherever I want it. Yes, some people are uncomfortable with the connection of the WR-R11a to the Z8/Z9 10 pin connector as they feel it exposes the system to damage, but I have used the system since it came out and haven't had any problems.
Tbh, when I switched to the Z8 for my outdoor work, my main priority was thermal management. If youre shooting airshows, youre likely pushing high-speed sync (HSS) to balance that harsh midday sun, which basically cooks most speedlights. I went with the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight specifically for its internal cooling system. Its the only unit Ive used that doesnt hit a thermal cut-off right when the action gets good. Reliability in the field is huge for wildlife too—the weather sealing on the SB-5000 actually matches the Z8s gaskets, which gives me peace of mind when the weather turns. Ive had third-party units flake out or the i-TTL communication fail because of a tiny bit of moisture or dust in the hot shoe, but the official Nikon gear just seems to have tighter tolerances for professional use. If you are doing high-volume shooting in "less than ideal" environments, the extra spend on the flagship flash pays for itself in avoided headaches. I also find the physical locking mechanism on the shoe much more robust than some of the plastic alternatives I've tried. Reliability is everything when you only get one chance at the shot.
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
For your Nikon Z8 and versatile needs like wildlife fill and other situations, a reliable speedlight with TTL is key. Many users find brands like Godox work well; compatibility with the Z8 is confirmed with triggers like the X2T/XPro 2. Look for a model offering good power and features like high-speed sync for flexibility. This should cover your needs nicely! Hope this helps!
